A “forbidding story” of almost 12,000 people being truly homeless.

“Scéal coscrach” beagnach 12,000 duine a bheith gan dídean cheart.

11,988 people were counted as homeless and living in emergency accommodation last month, according to the latest information from the Department of Housing.

Áiríodh 11,988 duine a bheith gan baile dá gcuid féin agus a bheith ag cur fúthu i gcóiríocht éigeandála an mhí seo caite, de réir na faisnéise is deireanaí ón Roinn Tithíochta.

That’s a 2.1% increase from the previous month and the highest number ever recorded.

Sin ardú 2.1 faoin gcéad ón mí roimhe sin agus an líon is airde a taifeadadh riamh.

The 11,988 people include 8,516 adults and 3,472 children.

Cuimsíonn an 11,988 duine 8,516 duine fásta agus 3,472 páiste.

The figures relate to the four weeks before the Government lifted the ban on eviction of tenants and people are worried that the next figures to be published will be even worse.

Baineann na figiúirí leis na ceithre seachtaine sular chuir an Rialtas deireadh leis an gcosc a bhí ar thionóntaí a dhíshealbhú agus tá imní ar dhaoine ina fhianaise sin go mbeidh na chéad fhigiúirí eile a fhoilseofar níos measa fós.

Wayne Stanley from the Clan Simon charity said that the new figures were a sobering story and he believes that even more people would have been homeless in March had it not been for the ban on eviction at the time.

Dúirt Wayne Stanley ón gcarthanas Clann Shíomóin gur scéal coscrach a bhí sna figiúirí nua agus dar leis go mbeadh níos mó daoine fós gan dídean i mí an Mhárta murach an cosc a bhí ar dhíshealbhú ag an am.

Since the ban on eviction was lifted at the beginning of this month, he said, the Government has even more duties to come to the aid of people who do not have a home of their own.

Ó cuireadh deireadh leis an gcosc ar dhíshealbhú i dtús na míosa seo, ar sé, tá níos mó dualgais fós ar an Rialtas teacht i gcabhair ar dhaoine nach bhfuil baile dá gcuid féin acu.

Two other charities, Depaul and Focus Ireland, said that the only solution to the situation was to provide new accommodation for people without delay and, in addition, to build more houses in the long run.

Dúirt dhá charthanas eile, Depaul agus Focus Ireland, nach raibh de réiteach ar an scéal ach cóiríocht úr a chur ar fáil do dhaoine gan mhoill agus, chomh maith leis sin, tuilleadh tithe a thógáil i bhfad na haimsire.
