The technology giant Google has announced that they are to let 240 workers in Ireland go.

That’s about 4.4% of the 5,500 people employed by Google in this country.

Staff were informed of the situation in an email today, and were told that a “joint consultation process” would begin tomorrow.

It was revealed that the workers would be let go from the sales, technology and engineering, and support departments.

Last month, Alphabet – Google’s parent company – announced that they were “cancelling” 12,000 jobs in different parts of the world.

However, the tech sector in the United States is in recession and the biggest companies in the sector have been letting go for several months – such as Twitter, Meta, Stripe, Amazon, Intel, Microsoft, Google, Salesforce, PayPal and HubSpot who have centers all in Ireland.

Despite this, the Government says that the technology sector in this country remains a strong base.
