The head of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission, Judge Rory MacCabe, has revealed that the organization does not have sufficient staff or other resources to properly investigate allegations of Garda misconduct.

The Commission is due to cease this year and a brand new institution called the Police Ombudsman Office is to be established in its place.

Currently, the Commission has an annual budget of €16.67 million and employs 170 people.

According to Judge MacCabe, however, both the budget and the number of staff should be doubled when the Police Ombudsman Office is established.

The judge also criticized the legislation under which the new office will be established.
