Argos to close their stores, 580 workers to be let go.

Retail company Argos is to close all its stores in the State at the end of June and let the 580 people who work for them go.
Tá an comhlacht miondíola Argos lena gcuid siopaí ar fad sa Stát a dhúnadh i ndeiridh an Mheithimh agus na 580 duine atá ag obair dóibh a ligean chun siúil.
In a statement, the company said that it would not be wise to invest more in their operations in the Republic of Ireland and that the money would be better invested in other parts of the business elsewhere.

The company promised that a very generous redundancy package would be given to the workers.

In that case, it was said, a special redundancy payment “as a goodwill gesture” will be given to the few people who are not entitled to the normal redundancy terms.

The 34 Argos stores in various parts of the State will be closed on June 24 and orders will not be accepted after March 22.

The Mandate union said they are disappointed by the news but would do their best to get the best redundancy deal for the workers.

It is understood that there was a drop of 21% on the company’s sales in the State last year and that they lost over €13 million.
