Spanish Army boat commemorated in Derry.

Bád ó Armáid na Spáinne á chomóradh i nDoire.

Multimedia Journalist An online virtual exhibition is to be launched at the Tower Museum in Derry as part of the 50th anniversary of the discovery of a Spanish Army wreck on the north coast.

Iriseoir Ilmheán Tá taispeántas fíorúil ar líne le seoladh ag Músaem an Túir i nDoire mar chuid de chomóradh 50 bliain ó aimsíodh bád raice ó Armáid na Spáinne ar chósta an tuaiscirt.

The exact location of the La Trinidad Valencera boat in Blacksmith’s Bay was not known for almost 400 years.

Ní raibh a fhios go baileach ar feadh nach mór 400 bliain cá raibh an bád La Trinidad Valencera ina luí i mBá Chionn an Ghabha.

La Trinidad Valencera went down in 1582 and on February 20, 1971, the fiftieth and tomorrow, the City of Derry Divers Association reunited.

Sa bhliain 1582 a chuaigh La Trinidad Valencera síos agus ar an 20 Feabhra 1971, leathchéad bliain is an lá amárach, tháinig Cumann Thumadóirí Chathair Dhoire uirthi arís.

The divers managed to take a bronze cannon, textile items and weapons from her.

Déirigh leis na tumadóirí canóin chré-umha, earraí teicstíle agus airm a thógáil uaithi.

“It was clear from the outset that they were doing this for their preservation rather than personal enrichment, which was extremely important at the time,” says Micheál Ó Domhnaill of the Spanish Army Committee, Ireland.

“Ba léir ón tús go rabhadar á dhéanamh seo ar mhaithe lena caomhnú seachas saibhriú pearsanta, rud a bhí thar a bheith tábhachtach ag an am,” a deir Micheál Ó Domhnaill ó Choiste Armáid na Spáinne, Éireann.

David Atherton, a former diver who was instrumental in the construction of the goods from the seabed in the 1970s and 1980s, has fond memories of the work: “It was fantastic.

Tá cuimhní ceanúla ag David Atherton, iarthumadóir a raibh lámh mhór aige i dtógáil na n-earraí ó ghrinneall na farraige sna 1970í agus sna 1980í ar an obair: “Bhí sé iontach ar fad.

We put a lot of work into it.

Chuireamar an-obair isteach ann.

We had a very strong team working on it. ”

Bhí meitheal an-láidir againn ag oibriú air.”

Local historian Dr Seán Ó Biataigh says that “locals were very proud that the Trinidad Valencera was found so close to the pier in Blacksmith.”

Deir an staraí áitiúil an Dr Seán Ó Biataigh go raibh “daoine áitiúla an-bhródúil go bhfuarthas an Trinidad Valencera chomh cóngarach don ché i gCionn an Ghabha.”

To commemorate the divers’ achievements and the story of the ship, Derry City and Strabane District Council has put together a virtual online exhibition.

Le gaiscí na dtumadóirí agus scéal na loinge a chomóradh, tá taispeántas fíorúil ar líne réitithe ag Comhairle Chathair Dhoire agus Cheantar an tSratha Báin.

“People will be able to view the exhibition around the world.

“Beidh daoine in ann amharc ar an taispeántas ar fud an domhain.

We have a wealth of new digital resources available – including letters, divers’ essays and photographs.

Tá cuid mhór acmhainní nua digiteacha ar fáil againn – litreacha, aistí na dtumadóirí agus grianghraif ina measc.

In addition, we have prepared an online digital tour, “says SDLP Councilor Mary Durkan.

Lena chois sin, tá camchuairt dhigiteach ullmhaithe againn ar líne,” a deir an Comhairleoir Mary Durkan ón SDLP.

It is estimated that about two dozen people were killed when La Trinidad Valencera went down.

Meastar gur cailleadh timpeall dhá scór duine nuair a chuaigh La Trinidad Valencera síos.

“All the remains are important, not just the cannons but other objects found aboard the Trinidad Valencera and which give personality to those who were lost,” says Micheál Ó Domhnaill.

“Tá na hiarsmaí go léir tábhachtach, ní hamháin na gunnaí móra ach rudaí eile a aimsíodh ar bord an Trinidad Valencera agus a thugann pearsantacht dóibh siúd a cailleadh,” a deir Micheál Ó Domhnaill.

Derry City and Strabane District Council will launch the online exhibition next Monday – a fitting recognition of a significant archaeological milestone.

Seolfaidh Comhairle Chathair Dhoire agus Cheantar an tSratha Báin an taispeántas ar líne Dé Luain seo chugainn – aitheantas cuí ar chloch mhíle shuntasach seandálaíochta.
