Multimedia Journalist An online virtual exhibition is to be launched at the Tower Museum in Derry as part of the 50th anniversary of the discovery of a Spanish Army wreck on the north coast.

The exact location of the La Trinidad Valencera boat in Blacksmith’s Bay was not known for almost 400 years.

La Trinidad Valencera went down in 1582 and on February 20, 1971, the fiftieth and tomorrow, the City of Derry Divers Association reunited.

The divers managed to take a bronze cannon, textile items and weapons from her.

“It was clear from the outset that they were doing this for their preservation rather than personal enrichment, which was extremely important at the time,” says Micheál Ó Domhnaill of the Spanish Army Committee, Ireland.

Local historian Dr Seán Ó Biataigh says that “locals were very proud that the Trinidad Valencera was found so close to the pier in Blacksmith.”

To commemorate the divers’ achievements and the story of the ship, Derry City and Strabane District Council has put together a virtual online exhibition.

It is estimated that about two dozen people were killed when La Trinidad Valencera went down.
