“Intimidation of politicians harms democracy”.

“Déanann imeaglú ar pholaiteoirí dochar don daonlathas”.

Threats and intimidation aimed at elected representatives are damaging to democracy, said the Minister for Integration, Roderic O’Gorman today, after a group of protestors gathered outside his home last night.

Déanann bagairtí agus imeaglú atá dírithe ar ionadaithe tofa dochar don daonlathas, a dúirt an tAire Lánpháirtíochta, Roderic O’Gorman inniu, i ndiaidh do ghrúpa daoine a bhí i mbun agóide a bhailiú taobh amuigh dá theach cónaithe aréir.

They were wearing face coverings and carrying anti-immigration signs.

Bhí clúdaigh aghaidhe á gcaitheamh acu agus bhí comharthaí frith- inimirce á n-iompar acu.

The Gardaí from Blancheir attended the scene, of which no one was arrested.

D’fhreastail na Gardaí ó Bhaile Bhlainséir ar an láthair, acu níor gabhadh aon duine.

“I want to thank the Gardai”, Minister O’Gorman said today.

“Ba mhaith liom buíochas a ghabháil leis na Gardaí”, a dúirt an tAire O’Gorman inniu.

“We have a strong tradition of democracy in this country.

“Tá traidisiún láidir daonlathais againn sa tír seo.

Representatives are accountable to the public they serve.

Tá ionadaithe freagrach don phobal a bhfreastalaíonn siad air.

It’s easy to contact us and give us feedback.

Tá sé furasta teagmháil a dhéanamh linn agus tuairimí a chur in iúl dúinn.

There are debates and disagreements between us, sometimes.

Bíonn díospóireachtaí eadarainn agus easaontas, uaireanta.

But respect is always shown.

Ach léirítear meas i gcónaí.

We place a high value on respect in this country; it is particularly valued by politicians.

Tá luach ard againn ar mheas sa tír seo; tá luach ar leith ag polaiteoirí air.

But intimidation of elected representatives will damage that relationship between representatives and their communities.

Ach déanfaidh imeaglú ar ionadaithe tofa dochar don chaidreamh sin idir ionadaithe agus a bpobail.

And democracy will be damaged as a result.”

Agus déanfar dochar don daonlathas dá bharr.”

The Taoiseach, Simon Harris, indicated earlier today that he feels “uneasy” about the incident in front of Roderic O’Gorman’s house yesterday.

Thug an Taoiseach, Simon Harris, le fios níos luaithe inniu go mbraitheann sé “míshuaimneach” faoin eachtra os comhair theach Roderic O’Gorman inné.

He said it was a frightening incident, one that would demoralize an elected representative.

Dúirt sé gur eachtra scanrúil a bhí ann, a chuirfeadh drochmhisneach ar ionadaí tofa.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee said she had spoken to the Garda Commissioner about the “appalling” incident.

Dúirt an tAire Dlí agus Cirt, Helen McEntee, gur labhair sí le Coimisinéir na nGardaí faoin eachtra “uafásach”.

In a statement on social media, she said the minister’s “privacy and property rights” had been violated, “in a way that would shock anyone.”

I ráiteas ar na meáin shóisialta, dúirt sí go ndearnadh “sárú ar chearta príobháideachais agus maoine” an aire, “ar shlí a gcuirfeadh samhnas ar dhuine.”
