Students staying in hotels for lack of appropriate accommodation.

Mic léinn ag fosadh in óstáin de cheal cóiríochta cuí.

Third level students in Limerick are staying in hotels as they cannot find appropriate accommodation in the city.

Tá mic léinn tríú leibhéal i Luimneach ag fanacht in óstáin mar nach féidir leo cóiríocht chuí a fháil sa chathair.

Under an agreement between Mary Immaculate College and hosts in Limerick, students are paying up to € 390 per week for five nights accommodation in one of three hotels in the city.

De réir socraithe atá déanta idir Choláiste Mhuire gan Smál agus lucht óstaíochta i Luimneach, tá na scoláirí ag íoc suas le €390 gach seachtain ar lóistín cúig oíche i gceann de thrí óstán sa chathair.

They arrive at the hotels on Sunday night and leave on Friday morning.

Tagann siad chuig na hóstáin san oíche Dé Domhnaigh agus imíonn siad astu ar maidin Dé hAoine.

The teacher training college has made a similar arrangement with a hotel in Thurles, Co Tipperary, where they have a smaller campus to the east of the Suir.

Tá socrú den sórt céanna déanta ag an gcoláiste oiliúna múinteoirí le hóstán i nDurlas, Co Thiobraid Árann, mar a bhfuil campas níos lú acu ar an taobh thoir den tSiúir.

College accommodation manager John Randles said this is not the best solution but there is no other option.

Dúirt bainisteoir lóistín an choláiste John Randles nach é seo an réiteach is fearr ach nach bhfuil aon rogha eile ann.

He pointed out that appropriate student accommodation in Limerick is scarcer this year than ever before.

Thug sé le fios go bhfuil cóiríocht chuí do mhic léinn i Luimneach níos gainne i mbliana ná riamh.

There are two reasons for this, he thinks.

Tá dhá chúis leis seo, dar leis.

Because students had been studying from home for a year and a half, he said, landlords had to rent long-term residences to others.

Mar gheall go raibh mic léinn ag staidéar ón mbaile le bliain go leith, a dúirt sé, b’éigean do thiarnaí talún árais chónaithe a ligean ar cíos fadtréimhseach do dhaoine eile.

Also, John Randles said, people are not providing students with rooms in their homes as they used to because of concerns about the spread of Covid-19.

Chomh maith leis sin, a dúirt John Randles, níl daoine ag cur seomraí ina dtithe féin ar fáil do scoláirí mar a bhíodh de bharr imní faoi leathadh covid 19.

Róisín Burke from the Students’ Union in Mary Immaculate College said that while people are grateful for the accommodation provided by the hotels, more specialist accommodation needs to be built for third level students.

Dúirt Róisín Burke ó Aontas na Mac Léinn i gColáiste Mhuire gan Smál cé go bhfuil daoine buíoch as an lóistín atá na hóstáin a chur ar fáil dóibh go gcaithfear tuilleadh saináras cónaithe a thógáil le haghaidh scoláirí tríú leibhéal.
