The Donegal Coroner has petitioned for serious consideration of the heartbreak of road accidents.

” Four beautiful men have passed away from this world in the prime of their youth because of decisions that have had a bad outcome, ” Coroner Dr Denis McCauley said.

Dr Caitríona Dillon revealed that post-mortem examinations revealed that the driver was involved in the accident in which four young men died in Gaoth Dobhair in County Donegal last year – six times over the alcohol limit and that his body also contained traces of cocaine.

It was a tragic accident that shook the north-west Donegal community in which four friends were killed.

They were John Harley, aged 24, from An Cheathrú Canainn, Falcarragh in the parish of Clonkennel, Shaun Harkin, aged 22, from Cill Ulta, Falcarragh, Daniel Scott, aged 23 from Gortahork and 24 – year – old Michael Roarty from Dunlewey in the parish of Gweedore.

Present at the Coroner’s Committee were the families of the four who were highly regarded in the community.

The Toyota Corolla car carrying the four friends went awry when she struck a grass clump in Gleann Ualach on the eastern edge of Gweedore parish on January 27 last year.

The deaths of the four were caused by head and body injuries at the scene which revealed post-mortem examinations by Dr Caitríona Dillon.

The driver of the car, Daniel Scott, who had returned home from Denmark, was six times over the alcohol ceiling and was found to have traces of cocaine in his body.

On behalf of the Gardaí, Inspector Seamus McGonagle extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.

The Coroner pleaded for people to reflect deeply on the heartbreak that comes with road accidents and offered condolences to the families, on a difficult day for them, he said.
