Around 4,000 children with additional educational needs went back to school today with special schools across the country reopening for the first time since Christmas.

124 special schools reopened this morning and by arrangement made by the Department of Education and the special needs teachers and assistants unions, 50% of pupils will return to the classroom every other day.

These special schools cater for over 8,000 students in total and the remaining 50% will gradually return.
