Fear cáiliúil sléibhe as California agus traenálaí béir ghránna agus ainmhithe fiáine eile a ghabh sé le haghaidh menageries, gairdíní zó-eolaíochta agus sorcais ab ea John “Grizzly” Adams (ar a dtugtar James Capen Adams agus Grizzly Adams freisin) (1812-1860) [a].

Adams began as an apprentice in the footwear manufacturing industry at age fourteen.

Thosaigh Adams mar phrintíseach sa tionscal déantúsaíochta coisbheart ag ceithre bliana déag d’aois.

At age twenty-one, he left that occupation, seeking to satisfy his true love – the outdoors and nature.

Ag aois a haon is fiche d’aois, d’fhág sé an ghairm sin, ag iarraidh a fhíor- ghrá a shásamh – an taobh amuigh agus an dúlra.

He signed on with a company of showmen as a zoological collector.

Shínigh sé le cuideachta lucht taispeána mar bhailitheoir zó-eolaíochta.

John hunted and captured live wild animals in the wildest parts of Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire, where he honed his woodsman, survival, and marksmanship skills.

Rinne John ainmhithe fiáine beo a fhiach agus a ghabháil sna codanna is fiáine de Maine, Vermont agus New Hampshire, áit ar thug sé ómós dá scileanna coillte, marthanais agus marcála.

However, Adams told Hittell, his hunting and trapping career ended abruptly when he received severe back and spine injuries from a Bengal tiger he was attempting to train for his employers.

Dúirt Adams le Hittell, áfach, gur tháinig deireadh tobann lena shlí bheatha seilge agus gaisteoireachta nuair a fuair sé gortuithe troma droma agus droma ó thíogair Bengal a raibh sé ag iarraidh oiliúint a chur ar a chuid fostóirí.

Not wanting to become a burden on his family, after a year of recuperating he returned to his cobblers bench in Boston, Massachusetts.

Gan a bheith ag iarraidh a bheith ina ualach ar a theaghlach, tar éis bliana d’aisghabháil d’fhill sé ar bhinse a ghreusaí i mBostún, Massachusetts.

In 1849 with the California Gold Rush in progress, John invested his life savings of over $6,000 to buy a large supply of footwear, and had it shipped to St.

In 1849 agus Rush Óir California ar siúl, d’infheistigh John a choigilteas saoil os cionn $ 6,000 chun soláthar mór coisbheart a cheannach, agus dá seolfaí chuig St.

He intended to sell his goods at great profit to the thousands of forty-niners passing through St.

Bhí sé i gceist aige a chuid earraí a dhíol ar bhrabús mór leis na mílte daichead a naoi a bhí ag dul trí St.

Through no fault of his own, he lost the entire investment in the St.

Gan aon locht air féin, chaill sé an infheistíocht iomlán sa St.

Shortly thereafter, Johns father committed suicide.

Go gairid ina dhiaidh sin, rinne athair John féinmharú.

– it is possible that he had invested heavily in Johns scheme.

– is féidir go ndearna sé infheistíocht mhór i scéim John.

At this point, John felt he had nothing to lose.

Ag an bpointe seo, mhothaigh Seán nach raibh aon rud le cailliúint aige.

He had a touch of gold fever and a yearning for adventure.

Bhí teagmháil aige le fiabhras óir agus blianacht le haghaidh eachtraíochta.

He knew even if he failed to recoup his lost investment in the mines, he could at least support himself by hunting and trapping in the untapped wilds of California.

Bhí a fhios aige fiú má theip air a infheistíocht chaillte sna mianaigh a aisghabháil, d’fhéadfadh sé ar a laghad tacú leis féin trí fhiach agus gaisteoireacht a dhéanamh i bhfiáine nár úsáideadh California.

He left his family and relatives behind in Massachusetts and joined the 49ers on their way to California.

D’fhág sé a theaghlach agus a ghaolta taobh thiar i Massachusetts agus chuaigh sé leis na 49ers ar a mbealach go California.

On his journey via the Santa Fe and Gila trails, he twice survived near fatal illnesses and arrived at the gold fields of California late in 1849.

Ar a thuras trí chosáin Santa Fe agus Gila, mhair sé faoi dhó in aice le tinnis marfacha agus shroich sé páirceanna óir California go déanach i 1849.

Adams tried his luck at mining, hunting game to sell to the miners, trading, and finally, ranching and farming.

Rinne Adams a ádh ar mhianadóireacht, cluiche seilge a dhíol leis na mianadóirí, ag trádáil, agus ar deireadh, ag feistiú agus ag feirmeoireacht.

At times he was rich and then, just as quickly, broke.

Uaireanta bhí sé saibhir agus ansin, chomh tapa céanna, bhris sé.

Late in 1852, having lost his ranch outside of Stockton, California, to creditors, he took the few items he could salvage and headed into the Sierra Nevada mountains to get away from it all.

Go déanach i 1852, tar éis dó a fheirm lasmuigh de Stockton, California, a chailleadh le creidiúnaithe, thóg sé an cúpla earra a d’fhéadfadh sé a shábháil agus chuaigh sé isteach i sléibhte Sierra Nevada chun fáil réidh leis ar fad.

With the help of the local Miwok Indians, Adams built a cabin and stable and spent the winter alone in the Sierra.

Le cabhair ó na hIndiaigh áitiúla Miwok, thóg Adams cábán agus stábla agus chaith sé an geimhreadh leis féin i Siarra.

John was an expert hunter and his New England training in shoemaking and leather craft gave him the necessary skills to fashion buckskin clothing and moccasins (the clothing he adopted as normal attire for the remainder of his life).

Ba shealgair saineolaí é John agus thug a oiliúint i Sasana Nua i ndéanamh bróg agus i gceardaíocht leathair na scileanna riachtanacha dó chun éadaí agus moccasins buckskin a fhaisean (an t-éadaí a ghlac sé mar ghnáth-attire an chuid eile dá shaol).

He also made his own harness, pack saddles, snowshoes and other items he needed.

Rinne sé a úim féin freisin, pacáil diallaití, bróga sneachta agus earraí eile a theastaigh uaidh.
