The Long Good Friday is a 1980 British gangster film starring Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren.

Scannán gangster Briotanach ó 1980 é The Long Good Friday ina bhfuil Bob Hoskins agus Helen Mirren.

It was completed in 1979, but because of release delays, it is generally credited as an 80s film.

Críochnaíodh é i 1979, ach mar gheall ar mhoilleanna scaoilte, creidtear go ginearálta é mar scannán sna 80idí.

The storyline weaves together events and concerns of the late 1970s, including mid-level political and police corruption, IRA fund-raising, displacement of traditional British industry by property development, UK membership of the EEC, and the free-market economy.

Fíoraíonn an scéal-líne imeachtaí agus ábhair imní ag deireadh na 1970idí, lena n-áirítear éilliú polaitiúil agus póilíní meánleibhéil, tiomsú airgid an IRA, díláithriú thionscal traidisiúnta na Breataine trí fhorbairt réadmhaoine, ballraíocht na RA i CEE, agus geilleagar an mhargaidh shaor.

A man named Colin delivers money to an unknown destination in Belfast, taking some of the cash in the process.

Seachadann fear darb ainm Colin airgead chuig ceann scríbe anaithnid i mBéal Feirste, ag glacadh cuid den airgead tirim sa phróiseas.

The recipients realise that money is missing but are then attacked.

Tuigeann na faighteoirí go bhfuil airgead in easnamh ach déantar ionsaí orthu ansin.

Soon afterwards, the delivery driver is kidnapped and killed.

Go luath ina dhiaidh sin, déantar an tiománaí seachadta a fhuadach agus a mharú.

Later, Colin is murdered whilst swimming.

Níos déanaí, dúnmharaítear Colin agus é ag snámh.

Harold Shand, a London gangster, is aspiring to become a legitimate businessman and is trying to form a partnership with the American Mafia, with a plan to redevelop London Docklands.

Tá Harold Shand, gangster i Londain, ag iarraidh a bheith ina fhear gnó dlisteanach agus tá sé ag iarraidh comhpháirtíocht a bhunú le Mafia Mheiriceá, le plean chun Dugthailte Londain a athfhorbairt.

Shands world is suddenly destabilised by the murders.

Déantar domhan Shand a dhíchobhsú go tobann ag na dúnmharuithe.

He and his henchmen try to uncover his attackers identities whilst simultaneously trying not to worry their visitors, fearing the Americans will abandon him if they think hes not in full control.

Déanann sé féin agus a sheanóirí iarracht aitheantais a chuid ionsaitheoirí a nochtadh agus iad ag iarraidh gan a bheith buartha faoina gcuairteoirí ag an am céanna, ar eagla go dtréigfidh na Meiriceánaigh é má cheapann siad nach bhfuil sé faoi smacht iomlán.

Shands girlfriend, Victoria, tells the Mafia representatives he is under attack from an unknown enemy, but assures them Shand is working to quickly resolve the crisis.

Insíonn a chailín Shand, Victoria, d’ionadaithe Mafia go bhfuil sé faoi ionsaí ó namhaid anaithnid, ach tugann sé dearbhú dóibh go bhfuil Shand ag obair chun an ghéarchéim a réiteach go tapa.

She starts to suspect Shands right hand man, Jeff, knows more about who is behind the attacks than he claims.

Tosaíonn sí ag drochamhras go bhfuil a fhios ag fear na láimhe deise Shand, Jeff, níos mó faoi cé atá taobh thiar de na hionsaithe ná mar a mhaíonn sé.

After some investigation, Shand confronts Jeff, who confesses he sent Shands friend Colin to Belfast to deliver money raised by Irish Navvies to the IRA.

Tar éis roinnt imscrúdaithe, tugann Shand aghaidh ar Jeff, a admhaíonn gur chuir sé cara Shand Colin go Béal Feirste chun airgead a bhailigh Irish Navvies a sheachadadh chuig an IRA.

He explains that three of the IRAs top men were killed on the same night after discovering some of the money had been stolen.

Míníonn sé gur maraíodh triúr de phríomhfhir an IRA an oíche chéanna tar éis dóibh a fháil amach gur goideadh cuid den airgead.

Shand realises the IRA have come to the conclusion that he sold them out to the security forces and pocketed the missing cash for himself.

Tuigeann Shand gur tháinig an IRA ar an gconclúid gur dhíol sé iad leis na fórsaí slándála agus gur phioc sé an t-airgead a bhí in easnamh air féin.

Vowing to destroy the terrorist organisation in London, Shand loses his temper and kills Jeff in a frenzy.

Ag vótáil chun an eagraíocht sceimhlitheoireachta i Londain a scriosadh, cailleann Shand a meon agus maraíonn sé Jeff i bhfuadar.

Shand sets up a meeting with the IRAs London leadership.

Cuireann Shand cruinniú ar bun le ceannaireacht an IRA i Londain.

He ostensibly offers them £60,000 in return for a ceasefire but double crosses them and has them shot as they are counting the cash.

Is cosúil go dtugann sé £ 60,000 dóibh mar chúiteamh ar sos cogaidh ach déanann sé iad a thrasnú faoi dhó agus lámhaigh iad agus iad ag comhaireamh an airgid.

Believing his enemies are dead, Shand travels to the Savoy Hotel to triumphantly inform his Mafia partners only to find the Americans preparing to leave, having been spooked by the carnage.

Ag creidiúint go bhfuil a naimhde marbh, téann Shand go dtí Óstán Savoy chun a chomhpháirtithe Mafia a chur ar an eolas go rathúil chun na Meiriceánaigh atá ag ullmhú chun imeacht a fháil, tar éis dóibh a bheith ag spochadh as an gcarnán.

In response to their derisory comments about the UK, Shand berates them for their arrogance and dismisses them as cowards.

Mar fhreagra ar a gcuid tuairimí dearfacha faoin Ríocht Aontaithe, spreagann Shand iad as a n-arrogance agus déanann sé iad a dhíbhe mar mhairtírigh.

Leaving the hotel, Shand steps into his chauffeur-driven car only to find it has been commandeered by IRA assassins.

Agus é ag fágáil an óstáin, ní théann Shand isteach ina charr faoi thiomáint chauffeur ach chun a fháil amach go bhfuil sé faoi cheannas assassins an IRA.

As the car speeds to an unknown destination, Shand contemplates the inevitability of his fate.

De réir mar a théann an carr go ceann scríbe anaithnid, déanann Shand machnamh ar dhosheachantacht a chinniúint.
