There was once a little Kid whose growing horns made him think he was a grown-up Billy Goat and able to take care of himself.
Il y avait une fois un petit Kid dont la croissance des cornes lui faisait penser qu’il était un Billy Goat adulte et capable de prendre soin de lui-même.
So one evening when the flock started home from the pasture and his mother called, the Kid paid no heed and kept right on nibbling the tender grass.
Ainsi, un soir, quand le troupeau est rentré du pâturage et que sa mère a appelé, le Kid n’a pas prêté attention et a continué à grignoter l’herbe tendre.
A little later when he lifted his head, the flock was gone.

The sun was sinking.

Long shadows came creeping over the ground.

A chilly little wind came creeping with them making scary noises in the grass.

The Kid shivered as he thought of the terrible Wolf.

Then he started wildly over the field, bleating for his mother.

But not half-way, near a clump of trees, there was the Wolf! The Kid knew there was little hope for him.

The Wolf liked the idea of a little music before eating, so he struck up a merry tune and the Kid leaped and frisked gaily.
Le loup aimait l’idée d’un peu de musique avant de manger, alors il a frappé un air joyeux et le Kid a sauté et fouillé gaiement.
Meanwhile, the flock was moving slowly homeward.
Pendant ce temps, le troupeau rentrait lentement chez lui.
In the still evening air the Wolf’s piping carried far.
Dans l’air calme du soir, la tuyauterie du Loup portait loin.
The Shepherd Dogs pricked up their ears.
Les chiens de berger ont dressé leurs oreilles.
They recognized the song the Wolf sings before a feast, and in a moment they were racing back to the pasture.
Ils ont reconnu la chanson que le Loup chante avant un festin, et en un instant ils ont regagné le pâturage.
The Wolf’s song ended suddenly, and as he ran, with the Dogs at his heels, he called himself a fool for turning piper to please a Kid, when he should have stuck to his butcher’s trade.
La chanson du Loup s’est terminée soudainement, et alors qu’il courait, avec les chiens à ses talons, il s’est appelé un idiot pour avoir joué de la cornemuse pour plaire à un enfant, alors qu’il aurait dû s’en tenir à son métier de boucher.
