“No proximity in online learning for autistic children”.

“Gan aon ghar i bhfoghlaim ar líne do leanaí uathacha”.

Teachers, parents, students and opposition parties have welcomed the Government’s decision to reverse its plan to open schools on Monday for Leaving Certificate students and children with special needs.

Tá fáilte curtha ag múinteoirí, tuismitheoirí, daltaí agus páirtithe an fhreasúra roimh chinneadh an Rialtais dul siar ar an bplean a bhí acu scoileanna a oscailt Dé Luain do dhaltaí Ardteistiméireachta agus do leanaí a bhfuil riachtanais speisialta acu.

The decision last night not to open the schools until the end of the month was made in light of concerns expressed about health and safety concerns by various groups.

Rinneadh an cinneadh aréir gan na scoileanna a oscailt go dtí deireadh na míosa i bhfianaise imní a bheith léirithe faoi chúrsaí sláinte agus sábháilteachta ag dreamanna éagsúla.

One union – the Association of Secondary Teachers – had instructed members not to return to school on Monday.

Bhí treoir tugtha ag ceardchumann amháin – Cumann na Meánmhúinteoirí – do na baill gan dul ar ais ar scoil Dé Luain.

However, the autism charity AsIAm has said that children with special needs and their families will suffer greatly as a result of the decision.

Ina dhiaidh sin féin, tá sé ráite ag an gcatharnas uathachais AsIAm go bhfulaingeoidh leanaí le riachtanais speisialta agus a muintreacha go mór de bharr an chinnidh.

Children with autism are dependent on classroom learning and many are nowhere near in online tutoring, said Adam Harris of AsIAm.

Tá leanaí a bhfuil uathachas ag dul dóibh ag brath ar fhoglaim sa seomra ranga agus níl aon ghar i dteagasc ar líne do go leor acu, a dúirt Adam Harris ó AsIAm.

He said the Department of Education should draft a plan to allow children with special needs to return to the classroom by January 18.

Dúirt sé gur cheart don Roinn Oideachais plean a dhréachtú faoina ligfí do leanaí a bhfuil riachtanais speisialta acu filleadh ar an seomra ranga faoi 18 Eanáir.

He wants to speak to Education Minister Norma Foley as a matter of urgency about the situation, he said.

Tá sé ag iarraidh labhairt leis an Aire Oideachais Norma Foley ar bhonn práinne faoin scéal, a dúirt sé.
