Planning permission granted for greenway in Kerry.

Cead pleanála tugtha do bhealach glas i gCiarraí.

An Bord Pleanála has granted planning permission for a 32 kilometer greenway in south Kerry and for the compulsory purchase of 220 landholdings along the route.

Tá cead pleanála tugtha ag an mBord Pleanála do bhealach glas 32 ciliméadar i ndeisceart Chiarraí agus do cheannach éigeanach 220 gabháltas talún feadh an bhealaigh.

The planning permission is accompanied by eleven conditions and the compulsory purchase of the holdings could still be amended, it was said.

Tá aon choinníoll déag ag dul leis an gcead pleanála agus dfhéadfaí ceannach éigeantach na ngabháltas a leasú fós, a dúradh.

The greenway follows the corridor of the old railway on the Greater Kerry Circuit.

Leanann an bealach glas conair an tsean-iarnróid ar Mhórchuaird Chiarraí.

It will be three meters wide and will provide a facility for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Trí mhéadar ar leithead a bheas sé agus áis do choisithe agus rothaithe araon a bheas ann.

The greenway was first proposed six years ago but was opposed by many people, mostly local farmers.

Moladh an bealach glas ar dtús sé bliana ó shin ach bhí go leor daoine, feirmeoirí áitiúila den chuid is mó, ag cur ina aghaidh.

Kerry County Council argues that the way is needed to tackle the economic downturn and population decline in the region.

Maíonn Comhairle Contae Chiarraí go bhfuil an bealach ag teastáil chun dul i ngleic leis an meath eacnamaíochta agus an lagdú daonra sa réigiún.

The County Council also considers that the route will not be detrimental to the environment.

Dar leis an gComhairle Contae chomh maith nach gcuirfidh an bealach as don chomhshaol.

Similar greenways have been very successful in Mayo and Waterford.

Tá éirithe go han-mhaith le bealaí glasa den sórt céanna i Maigh Eo agus i bPort Láirge.
