From the beginning, the press version of his story was “embroidered with falsehoods”.
Ón tús, bhí an leagan preasa dá scéal “bróidnithe le bréaga”.
“They said I was afraid of heights.
“Dúirt siad go raibh eagla orm ar airde.
But I was doing sixty jumps a day then, which is hardly something someone who was afraid of heights would do.”
Ach bhí mé ag déanamh seasca geansaí in aghaidh an lae ansin, rud ar éigean a dhéanfadh duine a raibh eagla air airde. “
His lack of success endeared him to people around the globe.
Chuir a easpa rath air deireadh le daoine ar fud na cruinne.
He subsequently became a media celebrity and appeared on talk shows around the world, appearing on The Tonight Show during the Games.
Tháinig cáil air sna meáin ina dhiaidh sin agus bhí sé ar thaispeántais cainte ar fud an domhain, le feiceáil ar The Tonight Show le linn na gCluichí.
The press nicknamed him “Mr.
Thug an preas leasainm air “Mr.
Magoo”, and one Italian journalist called him a “ski dropper”.
Magoo “, agus thug iriseoir Iodálach amháin” dropper sciála “air.
At the closing ceremony, the president of the Organizing Committee, Frank King, singled out Edwards for his contribution.
Ag an searmanas deiridh, luaigh uachtarán an Choiste Eagraithe, Frank King, Edwards as a chuid oibre.
King said, looking at the competitors, “You have broken world records and you have established personal bests.
Dúirt King, agus é ag féachaint ar na hiomaitheoirí, “Tá taifid dhomhanda briste agat agus tá rudaí pearsanta bunaithe agat.
Some of you have even soared like an eagle.”
D’ardaigh cuid agaibh fiú mar iolar. “
“Eddie the Eagle” Rule.
Riail “Eddie the Eagle”.
Following the widespread attention that Edwards received in Calgary shortly after the Olympics finished, the entry requirements were strengthened in order to make it nearly impossible for anyone to follow his example.
Tar éis an aird fhorleathan a fuair Edwards i Calgary go gairid tar éis do na Cluichí Oilimpeacha a bheith críochnaithe, neartaíodh na riachtanais iontrála d’fhonn go mbeadh sé beagnach dodhéanta d’aon duine a shampla a leanúint.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) instituted what became known as the Eddie the Eagle Rule, which requires Olympic hopefuls to compete in international events and be placed in the top 30 faoin gcéad or the top 50 competitors, whichever is fewer.
Bhunaigh an Coiste Oilimpeach Idirnáisiúnta (IOC) an rud ar a tugadh Riail Eddie the Eagle, a éilíonn ar dhaoine dóchasacha Oilimpeacha dul san iomaíocht in imeachtaí idirnáisiúnta agus a chur sa 30% is airde nó sna 50 iomaitheoir is fearr, cibé acu is lú.
Edwards failed to qualify for the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, and the 1994 Games in Lillehammer, Norway.
Theip ar Edwards cáiliú do Chluichí Oilimpeacha an Gheimhridh 1992 in Albertville, sa Fhrainc, agus i gCluichí 1994 i Lillehammer, an Iorua.
He got a five-year sponsorship from Eagle Airlines, a small British charter company, to support his attempt to reach the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan, but failed to qualify for those as well.
Fuair sé urraíocht cúig bliana ó Eagle Airlines, cuideachta bheag cairte Briotanach, chun tacú lena iarracht Cluichí 1998 a bhaint amach i Nagano, an tSeapáin, ach theip air cáiliú dóibh siúd freisin.
