“Níor mhol an Rialtas don Uachtarán gan dul chuig seirbhís”.

The Government has confirmed that it did not advise President Michael D Higgins to accept an invitation to attend a special service in Armagh to commemorate the partition of Ireland and the centenary of the founding of the Northern state.

Tá sé dearbhaithe ag an Rialtas nár chomhairligh siad don Uachtarán Michael D Higgins cur suas do chuireadh freastal ar sheirbhís speisialta in Ard Mhacha le críochdheighilt na hÉireann agus bunú stát an Tuaiscirt céad bliain ó shin a chomóradh.

The Government said they are constitutionally barred from giving such advice to the President.

Dúirt an Rialtas bhfuil cosc bunreachtúil orthu comhairle den chineál sin a chur ar an Uachtarán.

In a statement yesterday, a spokesman for the president said Michael D Higgins could not attend next month ‘s service but did not say exactly why.

I ráiteas inné, dúirt urlabhraí an Uachtaráin nach bhféadfadh Michael D Higgins freastal ar an tseirbhís a bheas ar siúl an mhí seo chugainn ach ní dúradh go baileach cén fáth.

DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson said the President’s decision was a step backwards in terms of reconciliation and called on him to reconsider it.

Dúirt ceannaire an DUP Jeffrey Donaldson gur céim ar gcúl ó thaobh an athmhuintearais de cinneadh an Uachtaráin agus d’iarr sé air a mhachnamh a dhéanamh arís air.

The service will be attended by Queen Elizabeth of England, the Catholic primate of Ireland, Archbishop Éamon Martin and the leaders of the other Christian churches.

Beidh Banríon Eilís Shasana, príomháidh Caitliceach na hÉireann, an tArdeaspag Éamon Martin agus ceannairí na n-eaglaisí Críostaí eile i láthair ag an tseirbhís.
