1 All this I took to heart, and my heart saw it all: that the upright and the wise and their works are in the hand of God; and men may not be certain if it will be love or hate; all is to no purpose before them.
1 Oui, j'ai appliqué mon coeur à tout cela, j'ai fait de tout cela l'objet de mon examen, et j'ai vu que les justes et les sages, et leurs travaux, sont dans la main de Dieu, et l'amour aussi bien que la haine; les hommes ne savent rien: tout est devant eux.
1 Rinne mé dianmhachnamh i mo chroí istigh ar an scéal seo go léir agus aithním go bhfuil na fíréin agus na saoithe agus a n‑oibreacha uile ar láimh Dé. Ach ní eol don duine an fabhar nó fuath atá ann dó; níl ciall ar bith le ceachtar acu, dar leis.
1 CIERTAMENTE dado he mi corazón á todas estas cosas, para declarar todo esto: que los justos y los sabios, y sus obras, están en la mano de Dios; y que no sabe el hombre ni el amor ni el odio por todo lo que pasa delante de él.
1 Denn ich habe solches alles zu Herzen genommen, zu forschen das alles, daß Gerechte und Weise und ihre Werke sind in Gottes Hand; kein Mensch kennt weder die Liebe noch den Haß irgend eines, den er vor sich hat.
2 Because to all there is one event, to the upright man and to the evil, to the clean and to the unclean, to him who makes an offering and to him who makes no offering; as is the good so is the sinner; he who takes an oath is as he who has fear of it.
2 Tout arrive également à tous; même sort pour le juste et pour le méchant, pour celui qui est bon et pur et pour celui qui est impur, pour celui qui sacrifie et pour celui qui ne sacrifie pas; il en est du bon comme du pécheur, de celui qui jure comme de celui qui craint de jurer.
2 Óir, is í an t‑aon chinniúint amháin atá i ndán do chách: don fhíréan agus don pheacach, don dea-dhuine agus don drochdhuine, don duine glan agus don duine neamhghlan, don duine a ofrálann íobairt agus don duine nach n‑ofrálann íobairt; is ionann cor don duine macánta agus don duine urchóideach, don té a mhionnaíonn go tobann agus don té a bhfuil eagla air mionn a thabhairt.
2 Todo acontece de la misma manera á todos: un mismo suceso ocurre al justo y al impío; al bueno y al limpio y al no limpio; al que sacrifica, y al que no sacrifica: como el bueno, así el que peca; el que jura, como el que teme el juramento.
2 Es begegnet dasselbe einem wie dem andern: dem Gerechten wie dem Gottlosen, dem Guten und Reinen wie dem Unreinen, dem, der opfert, wie dem, der nicht opfert; wie es dem Guten geht, so geht's auch dem Sünder; wie es dem, der schwört, geht, so geht's auch dem, der den Eid fürchtet.
3 This is evil in all things which are done under the sun: that there is one fate for all, and the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil; while they have life their hearts are foolish, and after that--to the dead.
3 Ceci est un mal parmi tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil, c'est qu'il y a pour tous un même sort; aussi le coeur des fils de l'homme est-il plein de méchanceté, et la folie est dans leur coeur pendant leur vie; après quoi, ils vont chez les morts. Car, qui est excepté?
3 I measc na nithe go léir a tharlaíonn abhus faoi luí na gréine is é seo an ceann is measa: nach bhfuil ach an t‑aon chinniúint amháin i ndán do chách. Dá dheasca sin tá croíthe na ndaoine lán d'urchóid, agus tá an díth céille i réim iontu fad is beo dóibh - agus ina dhiaidh sin siúd leo chun na marbh.
3 Este mal hay entre todo lo que se hace debajo del sol, que todos tengan un mismo suceso, y también que el corazón de los hijos de los hombres esté lleno de mal, y de enloquecimiento en su corazón durante su vida: y después, á los muertos.
3 Das ist ein böses Ding unter allem, was unter der Sonne geschieht, daß es einem geht wie dem andern; daher auch das Herz der Menschen voll Arges wird, und Torheit ist in ihrem Herzen, dieweil sie leben; darnach müssen sie sterben.
4 For him who is joined to all the living there is hope; a living dog is better than a dead lion.
4 Pour tous ceux qui vivent il y a de l'espérance; et même un chien vivant vaut mieux qu'un lion mort.
4 Óir tá ábhar dóchais fós ag an té atá i gcomhluadar na mbeo uile go fóill; mar is fearr madra beo ná leon marbh.
4 Aún hay esperanza para todo aquél que está entre los vivos; porque mejor es perro vivo que león muerto.
4 Denn bei allen Lebendigen ist, was man wünscht: Hoffnung; denn ein lebendiger Hund ist besser denn ein toter Löwe.
5 The living are conscious that death will come to them, but the dead are not conscious of anything, and they no longer have a reward, because there is no memory of them.
5 Les vivants, en effet, savent qu'ils mourront; mais les morts ne savent rien, et il n'y a pour eux plus de salaire, puisque leur mémoire est oubliée.

5 Denn die Lebendigen wissen, daß sie sterben werden; die Toten aber wissen nichts, sie haben auch keinen Lohn mehr, denn ihr Gedächtnis ist vergessen,
6 Their love and their hate and their envy are now ended; and they have no longer a part for ever in anything which is done under the sun.
6 Et leur amour, et leur haine, et leur envie, ont déjà péri; et ils n'auront plus jamais aucune part à tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil.

6 También su amor, y su odio y su envidia, feneció ya: ni tiene ya más parte en el siglo, en todo lo que se hace debajo del sol.
6 daß man sie nicht mehr liebt noch haßt noch neidet, und haben kein Teil mehr auf dieser Welt an allem, was unter der Sonne geschieht.
7 Come, take your bread with joy, and your wine with a glad heart. God has taken pleasure in your works.
7 Va, mange avec joie ton pain, et bois gaiement ton vin; car dès longtemps Dieu prend plaisir à ce que tu fais.

7 Anda, y come tu pan con gozo, y bebe tu vino con alegre corazón: porque tus obras ya son agradables á Dios.
7 So gehe hin und iß dein Brot mit Freuden, trink deinen Wein mit gutem Mut; denn dein Werk gefällt Gott.
8 Let your clothing be white at all times, and let not your head be without oil.
8 Qu'en tout temps tes vêtements soient blancs, et que l'huile ne manque point sur ta tête.

8 En todo tiempo sean blancos tus vestidos, y nunca falte ungüento sobre tu cabeza.

9 Have joy with the woman of your love all the days of your foolish life which he gives you under the sun. Because that is your part in life and in your work which you do under the sun.
9 Jouis de la vie avec la femme que tu aimes, pendant tous les jours de ta vie de vanité, que Dieu t'a donnés sous le soleil, pendant tous les jours de ta vanité; car c'est ta part dans la vie, au milieu de ton travail que tu fais sous le soleil.

9 Goza de la vida con la mujer que amas, todos los días de la vida de tu vanidad, que te son dados debajo del sol, todos los días de tu vanidad; porque esta es tu parte en la vida, y en tu trabajo con que te afanas debajo del sol.
9 Brauche das Leben mit deinem Weibe, das du liebhast, solange du das eitle Leben hast, das dir Gott unter der Sonne gegeben hat, solange dein eitel Leben währt; denn das ist dein Teil im Leben und in deiner Arbeit, die du tust unter der Sonne.
10 Whatever comes to your hand to do with all your power, do it because there is no work, or thought, or knowledge, or wisdom in the place of the dead to which you are going.
10 Tout ce que ta main trouve à faire avec ta force, fais-le; car il n'y a ni oeuvre, ni pensée, ni science, ni sagesse, dans le séjour des morts, où tu vas.
10 Cibé ar bith obair a bhíonn idir lámha agat caith iomláine do dhúthrachta léi mar níl obair ná dianmhachnamh ná eolas ná eagna i Seól, an áit ar a bhfuil do thriall.
10 Todo lo que te viniere á la mano para hacer, hazlo según tus fuerzas; porque en el sepulcro, adonde tú vas, no hay obra, ni industria, ni ciencia, ni sabiduría.
10 Alles, was dir vor Handen kommt, zu tun, das tue frisch; denn bei den Toten, dahin du fährst, ist weder Werk, Kunst, Vernunft noch Weisheit.
11 And again I saw under the sun that the reward goes not to him who is quick, or the fruits of war to the strong; and there is no bread for the wise, or wealth for men of learning, or respect for those who have knowledge; but time and chance come to all.
11 J'ai encore vu sous le soleil que la course n'est point aux agiles ni la guerre aux vaillants, ni le pain aux sages, ni la richesse aux intelligents, ni la faveur aux savants; car tout dépend pour eux du temps et des circonstances.

11 Tornéme, y vi debajo del sol, que ni es de los ligeros la carrera, ni la guerra de los fuertes, ni aun de los sabios el pan, ni de los prudentes las riquezas, ni de los elocuentes el favor; sino que tiempo y ocasión acontece á todos.
11 Ich wandte mich und sah, wie es unter der Sonne zugeht, daß zum Laufen nicht hilft schnell zu sein, zum Streit hilft nicht stark sein, zur Nahrung hilft nicht geschickt sein, zum Reichtum hilft nicht klug sein; daß einer angenehm sei, dazu hilft nicht, daß er ein Ding wohl kann; sondern alles liegt an Zeit und Glück.
12 Even man has no knowledge of his time; like fishes taken in an evil net, or like birds taken by deceit, are the sons of men taken in an evil time when it comes suddenly on them.
12 L'homme ne connaît pas non plus son heure, pareil aux poissons qui sont pris au filet fatal, et aux oiseaux qui sont pris au piège; comme eux, les fils de l'homme sont enlacés au temps du malheur, lorsqu'il tombe sur eux tout à coup.
12 Óir ní eol don duine a ionú féin; mar éisc a cheaptar i líon fealltach, nó mar éin a mbeirtear orthu i gcliabhán, sin mar a ghabhtar daoine nuair a thagann uair an mhí-áidh orthu go tobann.
12 Porque el hombre tampoco conoce su tiempo: como los peces que son presos en la mala red, y como las aves que se prenden en lazo, así son enlazados los hijos de los hombres en el tiempo malo, cuando cae de repente sobre ellos.
12 Auch weiß der Mensch seine Zeit nicht; sondern, wie die Fische gefangen werden mit einem verderblichen Haken, und wie die Vögel mit einem Strick gefangen werden, so werden auch die Menschen berückt zur bösen Zeit, wenn sie plötzlich über sie fällt.
13 This again I have seen under the sun as wisdom and it seemed great to me.

14 There was a little town and the number of its men was small, and there came a great king against it and made an attack on it, building works of war round about it.
14 Il y avait une petite ville, avec peu d'hommes dans son sein; un roi puissant marcha sur elle, l'investit, et éleva contre elle de grands forts.

14 daß eine kleine Stadt war und wenig Leute darin, und kam ein großer König und belagerte sie und baute große Bollwerke darum,
15 Now there was in the town a poor, wise man, and he, by his wisdom, kept the town safe. But no one had any memory of that same poor man.
15 Il s'y trouvait un homme pauvre et sage, qui sauva la ville par sa sagesse. Et personne ne s'est souvenu de cet homme pauvre.

15 und ward darin gefunden ein armer, weiser Mann, der errettete dieselbe Stadt durch seine Weisheit; und kein Mensch gedachte desselben armen Mannes.
16 Then I said, Wisdom is better than strength, but the poor man's wisdom is not respected, and his words are not given a hearing.
16 Et j'ai dit: La sagesse vaut mieux que la force. Cependant la sagesse du pauvre est méprisée, et ses paroles ne sont pas écoutées.

17 The words of the wise which come quietly to the ear are noted more than the cry of a ruler among the foolish.
