1 And again I saw all the cruel things which are done under the sun; there was the weeping of those who have evil done to them, and they had no comforter: and from the hands of the evil-doers there went out power, but they had no comforter.
1 J'ai considéré ensuite toutes les oppressions qui se commettent sous le soleil; et voici, les opprimés sont dans les larmes, et personne qui les console! ils sont en butte à la violence de leurs oppresseurs, et personne qui les console!

1 Y TORNÉME yo, y vi todas las violencias que se hacen debajo del sol: y he aquí las lágrimas de los oprimidos, y sin tener quien los consuele; y la fuerza estaba en la mano de sus opresores, y para ellos no había consolador.
1 Ich wandte mich um und sah an alles Unrecht, das geschah unter der Sonne; und siehe, da waren die Tränen derer, so Unrecht litten und hatten keinen Tröster; und die ihnen Unrecht taten, waren zu mächtig, daß sie keinen Tröster haben konnten.
2 So my praise was for the dead who have gone to their death, more than for the living who still have life.
2 Et j'ai trouvé les morts qui sont déjà morts plus heureux que les vivants qui sont encore vivants,

2 Y alabé yo los finados que ya murieron, más que los vivientes que hasta ahora están vivos.
2 Da lobte ich die Toten, die schon gestorben waren, mehr denn die Lebendigen, die noch das Leben hatten;
3 Yes, happier than the dead or the living seemed he who has not ever been, who has not seen the evil which is done under the sun.
3 et plus heureux que les uns et les autres celui qui n'a point encore existé et qui n'a pas vu les mauvaises actions qui se commettent sous le soleil.

3 und besser als alle beide ist, der noch nicht ist und des Bösen nicht innewird, das unter der Sonne geschieht.
4 And I saw that the cause of all the work and of everything which is done well was man's envy of his neighbour. This again is to no purpose and a desire for wind.
4 J'ai vu que tout travail et toute habileté dans le travail n'est que jalousie de l'homme à l'égard de son prochain. C'est encore là une vanité et la poursuite du vent.

4 Visto he asimismo que todo trabajo y toda excelencia de obras mueve la envidia del hombre contra su prójimo. También esto es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.
4 Ich sah an Arbeit und Geschicklichkeit in allen Sachen; da neidet einer den andern. Das ist auch eitel und Haschen nach dem Wind.
5 The foolish man, folding his hands, takes the flesh of his body for food.
5 L'insensé se croise les mains, et mange sa propre chair.
5 Snaidhmeann an t‑amadán a lámha ina chéile agus ní bhíonn an rath air.
5 El necio dobla sus manos y come su carne.

6 One hand full of rest is better than two hands full of trouble and desire for wind.

7 Then I came back, and I saw an example of what is to no purpose under the sun.

7 Ich wandte mich um und sah die Eitelkeit unter der Sonne.
8 It is one who is by himself, without a second, and without son or brother; but there is no end to all his work, and he has never enough of wealth. For whom, then, am I working and keeping myself from pleasure? This again is to no purpose, and a bitter work.
8 Tel homme est seul et sans personne qui lui tienne de près, il n'a ni fils ni frère, et pourtant son travail n'a point de fin et ses yeux ne sont jamais rassasiés de richesses. Pour qui donc est-ce que je travaille, et que je prive mon âme de jouissances? C'est encore là une vanité et une chose mauvaise.

8 Está un hombre solo y sin sucesor; que ni tiene hijo ni hermano; mas nunca cesa de trabajar, ni sus ojos se hartan de sus riquezas, ni se pregunta: ¿Para quién trabajo yo, y defraudo mi alma del bien? También esto es vanidad, y duro trabajo.
8 Es ist ein einzelner, und nicht selbander, und hat weder Kind noch Bruder; doch ist seines Arbeitens kein Ende, und seine Augen werden Reichtums nicht satt. Wem arbeite ich doch und breche meiner Seele ab? Das ist auch eitel und eine böse Mühe.
9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their work.

13 A young man who is poor and wise is better than a king who is old and foolish and will not be guided by the wisdom of others.
13 Mieux vaut un enfant pauvre et sage qu'un roi vieux et insensé qui ne sait plus écouter les avis;

15 I saw all the living under the sun round the young man who was to be ruler in place of the king.
15 J'ai vu tous les vivants qui marchent sous le soleil entourer l'enfant qui devait succéder au roi et régner à sa place.

16 There was no end of all the people, of all those whose head he was, but they who come later will have no delight in him. This again is to no purpose and desire for wind.
16 Il n'y avait point de fin à tout ce peuple, à tous ceux à la tête desquels il était. Et toutefois, ceux qui viendront après ne se réjouiront pas à son sujet. Car c'est encore là une vanité et la poursuite du vent.
