Ecclesiastes 2

1 For everything there is a fixed time, and a time for every business under the sun.

1 Tá a ionú féin ag gach uile ní agus tá a thráth ann don uile ghnó faoin spéir:

2 A time for birth and a time for death; a time for planting and a time for uprooting;

2 un temps pour naître, et un temps pour mourir; un temps pour planter, et un temps pour arracher ce qui a été planté;

2 tráth breithe, tráth báis, tráth curtha síl, tráth bainte fómhair,

2 Tiempo de nacer, y tiempo de morir; tiempo de plantar, y tiempo de arrancar lo plantado;

3 A time to put to death and a time to make well; a time for pulling down and a time for building up;

3 un temps pour tuer, et un temps pour guérir; un temps pour abattre, et un temps pour bâtir;

3 tráth maraithe, tráth leighis, tráth leagtha, tráth tógála,

3 Tiempo de matar, y tiempo de curar; tiempo de destruir, y tiempo de edificar;

3 würgen und heilen, brechen und bauen,

4 A time for weeping and a time for laughing; a time for sorrow and a time for dancing;

4 un temps pour pleurer, et un temps pour rire; un temps pour se lamenter, et un temps pour danser;

4 tráth goil, tráth gáire, tráth caointe, tráth rince,

4 Tiempo de llorar, y tiempo de reir; tiempo de endechar, y tiempo de bailar;

4 weinen und lachen, klagen und tanzen,

5 A time to take stones away and a time to get stones together; a time for kissing and a time to keep from kissing;

5 un temps pour lancer des pierres, et un temps pour ramasser des pierres; un temps pour embrasser, et un temps pour s'éloigner des embrassements;

5 tráth scaipthe cloch, tráth bailithe cloch, tráth beirthe barróg, tráth séanta barróg,

5 Tiempo de esparcir las piedras, y tiempo de allegar las piedras; tiempo de abrazar, y tiempo de alejarse de abrazar;

6 A time for search and a time for loss; a time to keep and a time to give away;

6 un temps pour chercher, et un temps pour perdre; un temps pour garder, et un temps pour jeter;

6 tráth cuardaigh, tráth caillte, tráth coimeádta, tráth caite,

6 Tiempo de agenciar, y tiempo de perder; tiempo de guardar, y tiempo de arrojar;

6 suchen und verlieren, behalten und wegwerfen,

7 A time for undoing and a time for stitching; a time for keeping quiet and a time for talk;

7 un temps pour déchirer, et un temps pour coudre; un temps pour se taire, et un temps pour parler;

7 tráth stróicthe, tráth fuála, tráth tosta, tráth cainte,

7 Tiempo de romper, y tiempo de coser; tiempo de callar, y tiempo de hablar;

7 zerreißen und zunähen, schweigen und reden,

8 A time for love and a time for hate; a time for war and a time for peace.

9 What profit has the worker in the work which he does?

9 Cén tairbhe a bhaineann duine as an dúthracht a chaitheann sé lena chuid oibre?

9 Man arbeite, wie man will, so hat man doch keinen Gewinn davon.

10 I saw the work which God has put on the sons of man.

10 Chonaic mé an saothar a thug Dia don chine daonna le déanamh.

11 He has made everything right in its time; but he has made their hearts without knowledge, so that man is unable to see the works of God, from the first to the last.

11 Gach uile ní a dhéanann Dia, oireann sé dá thráth féin; ach bíodh gur chuir sé ar chumas an duine machnamh a dhéanamh ar imeacht an ama ina iomláine, ní féidir leis an duine an obair a dhéanann Dia ó thús go deireadh a thuiscint.

12 I am certain that there is nothing better for a man than to be glad, and to do good while life is in him.

12 J'ai reconnu qu'il n'y a de bonheur pour eux qu'à se réjouir et à se donner du bien-être pendant leur vie;

12 Is eol dom nach bhfuil aon ní ann is fearr do dhuine ná gairdeas a dhéanamh agus saol sona sásta a chaitheamh fad is beo dó.

13 And for every man to take food and drink, and have joy in all his work, is a reward from God.

13 Go deimhin, má éiríonn le duine ithe agus ól a dhéanamh agus aoibhneas a bhaint as a chuid saothair go léir, is tabhartas ó Dhia é.

14 I am certain that whatever God does will be for ever. No addition may be made to it, nothing may be taken from it; and God has done it so that man may be in fear before him.

14 Is eol dom freisin gur síoraí suthain gach uile ní a dhéanann Dia; ní féidir cur leo nó baint uathu. Is mar seo a rinne Dia iad le go mbeadh eagla ar dhaoine roimhe.

15 Whatever is has been before, and what is to be is now; because God makes search for the things which are past.

15 An ní atá ann anois, bhí sé ann roimhe seo; agus an ní a bheidh ann, bhí sé ann cheana agus bíonn Dia ag síorathnuachan na nithe a bhí ann tráth dá raibh.

15 Was geschieht, das ist zuvor geschehen, und was geschehen wird, ist auch zuvor geschehen; und Gott sucht wieder auf, was vergangen ist.

16 And again, I saw under the sun, in the place of the judges, that evil was there; and in the place of righteousness, that evil was there.

16 Rud eile dhe, chonaic mé go raibh an éagóir in áit na córa agus an t‑aincheart in áit an chirt abhus faoi luí na gréine.

17 I said in my heart, God will be judge of the good and of the bad; because a time for every purpose and for every work has been fixed by him.

17 Arsa mise liom féin: “Tabharfaidh Dia breithiúnas ar an dea-dhuine agus ar an droch-dhuine araon, mar tá a ionú féin ag gach gnó agus gníomh ansin.”

18 I said in my heart, It is because of the sons of men, so that God may put them to the test and that they may see themselves as beasts.

18 Arsa mise liom féin arís: “Maidir leis an gcine daonna, tá Dia tar éis iad a thástáil go cinnte agus a thaispeáint nach bhfuil iontu uathu féin ach ainmhithe.”

19 Because the fate of the sons of men and the fate of the beasts is the same. As is the death of one so is the death of the other, and all have one spirit. Man is not higher than the beasts; because all is to no purpose.

19 Óir tá an chinniúint chéanna ag an duine agus atá ag an ainmhí; mar a fhaigheann ceann acu bás, sin mar a fhaigheann an ceann eile bás chomh maith; óir tá an t‑aon spiorad amháin iontu go léir agus níl aon bhuntáiste ag an duine ar an ainmhí. Baois is ea gach uile ní.

20 All go to one place, all are of the dust, and all will be turned to dust again.

20 Téann siad go léir go dtí an áit chéanna; is den luaithreach iad uile agus iompóidh siad uile ina luaithreach arís.

21 Who is certain that the spirit of the sons of men goes up to heaven, or that the spirit of the beasts goes down to the earth?

21 Cé ar eol dó an dtéann spiorad an duine suas nó an dtéann spiorad an ainmhí síos sa talamh?

22 So I saw that there is nothing better than for a man to have joy in his work--because that is his reward. Who will make him see what will come after him?

22 Dá bharr sin uile chonaic mé nach bhfuil aon ní ann is fearr do dhuine ná gairdeas a dhéanamh ina chuid oibre, mar is é sin a chinniúint. Óir cé a thabharfaidh dó na nithe a thitfidh amach ina dhiaidh a fheiceáil?
