Nehemiah 3

1 Now, Sanballat, hearing that we were building the wall, was very angry, and in his wrath made sport of the Jews.

1 Nuair a chuala Sanballat go raibh na ballaí á n-atógáil againn, tháinig fraoch agus cuthach feirge air.

2 And in the hearing of his countrymen and the army of Samaria he said, What are these feeble Jews doing? will they make themselves strong? will they make offerings? will they get the work done in a day? will they make the stones which have been burned come again out of the dust?

Sacrifieront-ils? Vont-ils achever?

2 agus dúirt i láthair a ghaolta agus maithe na Samáire: “Cén fuadar atá faoi na truáin Ghiúdacha seo? [An bhfuil siad le tosú?] An dóigh leo nach bhfuil ann ach gnó lae acu? An dóigh leo gur féidir dóibh anam a chur arís sna clocha seo, na clocha dóite seo, a sciob siad ó na cnocáin luaithrigh?”

3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Such is their building that if a fox goes up it, their stone wall will be broken down.

3 Bhí Tóibíá an tAmónach taobh leis, agus dúirt sé: “Tógaidís leo! má phreabann sionnach ar a mballa, leagfaidh sé na clocha anuas!”

4 Give ear, O our God, for we are looked down on: let their words of shame be turned back on themselves, and let them be given up to wasting in a land where they are prisoners:

4 Féach, cad é drochmheas atá orainn, a Dhia linn! Tabhair a n-asacháin sa mhullach orthu féin! Cuir táir orthu i dtír éigin ina dtiomáinfear iad ar deoraíocht.

5 Let not their wrongdoing be covered or their sin washed away from before you: for they have made you angry before the builders.

6 So we went on building the wall; and all the wall was joined together half-way up: for the people were working hard.

6 Bhíomar ag atógáil an bhalla idir an dá linn, agus ba ghearr go raibh sé leath slí suas timpeall ar fad mar go raibh fonn oibre ar na daoine.

7 But when it came to the ears of Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabians and the Ammonites and the Ashdodites, that the building of the walls of Jerusalem was going forward and the broken places were being made good, they were full of wrath;

7 Nuair a fuair Sanballat, Tóibíá, na hArabaigh, na hAmónaigh, agus na hAisdeodaigh tuairisc go raibh deisiú ballaí Iarúsailéim ag dul chun cinn agus go raibh na bearnaí á n‑iamh de réir a chéile, tháinig an-fhearg orthu,

7 Mas acaeció que oyendo Sanballat y Tobías, y los Arabes, y los Ammonitas, y los de Asdod, que los muros de Jerusalem eran reparados, porque ya los portillos comenzaban á cerrarse, encolerizáronse mucho;

8 And they made designs, all of them together, to come and make an attack on Jerusalem, causing trouble there.

8 agus rinneadar comhcheilg teacht le chéile agus Iarúsailéim a ionsaí agus cur as do mo bheartas.

9 But we made our prayer to God, and had men on watch against them day and night because of them.

9 Ansin ghuíomar chun ár nDé agus chuireamar buíon ar garda ina n‑aghaidh de lá agus d'oíche [d'fhonn an chathair a chosaint].

10 And Judah said, The strength of the workmen is giving way, and there is much waste material; it is impossible for us to put up the wall.

10 Ach chrom Iúdá ar ghearán: “Tá neart an lucht iompair ag teip agus is mór a bhfuil de luaithreach ann fós; ní chuirfimid críoch leis an mballa go deo.”

11 And those who were against us said, Without their knowledge and without their seeing us, we will come among them and put them to death, causing the work to come to a stop.

11 Agus deireadh ár naimhde: “Tiocfaimid aniar aduaidh orthu gan fhios gan radharc acu, ansin déanfaimid iad a threascairt agus deireadh a chur leis an ngnó seo.”

12 And it came about that when the Jews who were living near them came, they said to us ten times, From all directions they are coming against us.

12 Thug Giúdaigh a bhí ag cur fúthu ina gcóngar rabhadh dúinn deich n‑uaire ina dtaobh, á rá: “Tá siad chugainn as gach ball ina bhfuil cónaí orthu.”

13 So in the lowest part of the space at the back of the walls, in the open places, I put the people by families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

14 And after looking, I got up and said to the great ones and to the chiefs and to the rest of the people, Have no fear of them: keep in mind the Lord who is great and greatly to be feared, and take up arms for your brothers, your sons, and your daughters, your wives and your houses.

14 Thug mé faoi deara [an eagla a bhí orthu] agus d'éirigh mé i mo sheasamh agus dúirt mé leis na huachtaráin, na maoir, agus leis an bpobal eile go léir: “Ná bíodh eagla oraibh rompu! Cuimhnigí ar an Tiarna, mar is mór é agus is díol urraime é; troidigí ar son bhur ngaolta, bhur gclann mhac agus iníonacha ar son bhur mban agus bhur mbaile.”

15 And when it came to the ears of those who were against us, that we had knowledge of their designs and that God had made their purpose come to nothing, we all went back to the wall, everyone to his work

15 Nuair a fuair ár naimhde amach go raibh rabhadh faighte againn, agus gur chuir Dia a bplean amú, [d'imíodar leo] agus chuamar go léir ar ais, gach duine i mbun a shaothair ar an mballa.

16 And from that time, half of my servants were doing their part of the work, and half kept the spears and body-covers and the bows and the metal war-dresses; and the chiefs were at the back of the men of Judah.

16 Ón lá sin amach ní bhíodh ach leath mo chuid fear ag tógáil; bhíodh an chuid eile ina seasamh, agus sleánna sciatha boghanna agus lúireacha acu, ar chúl teaghlach Iúdá,

17 Those who were building the wall and those who were moving material did their part, everyone working with one hand, with his spear in the other;

17 Ceux qui bâtissaient la muraille, et ceux qui portaient ou chargeaient les fardeaux, travaillaient d'une main et tenaient une arme de l'autre;

17 a bhí ag tógáil an bhalla. Bhíodh [airm ag] an lucht iompair chomh maith, i dtreo go ndéanadh gach duine díobh a ghnó lena leathláimh agus a arm ina leathláimh eile.

18 Every builder was working with his sword at his side. And by my side was a man for sounding the horn.

18 Agus gach saor i mbun tógála bhíodh a chlaíomh ina chrios aige. Bhíodh fear an stoic le m'ais.

19 And I said to the great ones and the chiefs and the rest of the people, The work is great and widely spaced and we are far away from one another on the wall:

19 Dúirt mé leis na huachtaráin, leis na feidhmeannaigh agus leis an gcuid eile den phobal: “Tá an obair mór agus í leata go fairsing agus táimid scartha i bhfad óna chéile ar na ballaí.

20 Wherever you may be when the horn is sounded, come here to us; our God will be fighting for us.

20 Cibé áit ina gcloisfidh sibh an stoc á shéideadh, cruinnigí inár dtimpeall, agus troidfidh ár nDia thar ár gceann.”

21 So we went on with the work: and half of them had spears in their hands from the dawn of the morning till the stars were seen.

21 Chuamar ar aghaidh leis an obair mar sin [agus airm i lámha leath na bhfear] ó bhreacadh an lae go glioscarnach na réaltaí.

22 And at the same time I said to the people, Let everyone with his servant come inside Jerusalem for the night, so that at night they may keep watch for us, and go on working by day.

22 Ansin dúirt mé leis an bpobal: “Caitheadh gach fear agus a sheirbhíseach an oíche in Iarúsailéim agus ar an tslí sin beidh siad ag faire dúinn san oíche agus ag obair sa lá.”

23 So not one of us, I or my brothers or my servants or the watchmen who were with me, took off his clothing, everyone went armed to the water.

23 Ní dhearna aon duine againn, mé féin ná mo ghaolta ná mo sheirbhísigh ná baill mo gharda phearsanta, ár gcuid éadaigh a bhaint dínn aon uair, ach a airm [i láimh gach duine].
