Nehemiah 1

1 And it came about in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, when wine was before him, that I took up the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had never before been sad when the king was present.

1 I mí Níosán, san fhichiú bliain de réimeas an rí, Artaxarxaes, bhí a chuid fíona os a chomhair; thóg mé suas an fíon agus thug mé don rí é; [roimhe sin] ní raibh mé riamh faoi bhrón ina láthair.

2 And the king said to me, Why is your face sad, seeing that you are not ill? this is nothing but sorrow of heart. Then I was full of fear;

2 Le roi me dit: Pourquoi as-tu mauvais visage?

2 Dúirt an rí liom mar sin: “Cén fáth a bhfuil aghaidh bhrónach ort os rud é nach bhfuil tú tinn? Ní foláir nó go bhfuil dólás éigin ar do chroí.”

3 And said to the king, May the king be living for ever: is it not natural for my face to be sad, when the town, the place where the bodies of my fathers are at rest, has been made waste and its doorways burned with fire?

3 agus dúirt mé leis an rí: “Gura fada buan an rí! Cén fáth nach mbeadh aghaidh bhrónach orm nuair atá conamar déanta den chathair mar a bhfuil mo shinsir curtha agus a geataí loiscthe le tine?”

4 Then the king said to me, What is your desire? So I made prayer to the God of heaven.

4 Et le roi me dit: Que demandes-tu?

5 And I said to the king, If it is the king's pleasure, and if your servant has your approval, send me to Judah, to the town where the bodies of my fathers are at rest, so that I may take in hand the building of it.

5 agus dúirt mé leis á fhreagairt: “Mura miste leat é agus má tá lé ar bith agat liomsa, do sheirbhíseach, ba bhreá liom é dá gcuirfeá go dtí Iúdá mé chun na cathrach sin mar a bhfuil mo shinsir curtha, chun í a atógáil.”

6 And the king said to me (the queen being seated by his side), How long will your journey take, and when will you come back? So the king was pleased to send me, and I gave him a fixed time.

6 D'fhiafraigh an rí díom ansin - agus an bhanríon ina suí taobh leis: “Cá fhad a bhainfidh do thuras asat agus cathain a fhillfidh tú?” D'aontaigh an rí mé a chur ann agus d'inis mé dó cá fhad a bheinn as láthair.

7 Further, I said to the king, If it is the king's pleasure, let letters be given to me for the rulers across the river, so that they may let me go through till I come to Judah;

7 Dúirt mé leis chomh maith: “Mura miste le do mhórgacht é, tugtar litreacha dom le haghaidh gobharnóirí an chúige thar Eofrataes, á rá leo ligean dom dul slán trína gcríocha go dtí Iúdá;

7 Además dije al rey: Si al rey place, dénseme cartas para los gobernadores de la otra parte del río, que me franqueen el paso hasta que llegue á Judá;

8 And a letter to Asaph, the keeper of the king's park, so that he may give me wood to make boards for the doors of the tower of the house, and for the wall of the town, and for the house which is to be mine. And the king gave me this, for the hand of my God was on me.

8 agus litir eile le haghaidh Ásáf, coimeádaí na bhforaoiseacha ríoga, á rá leis adhmad a thabhairt dom chun geataí a dhéanamh do dhúnfort an Teampaill agus le haghaidh ballaí na cathrach agus don teach a ndéanfainn féin cónaí ann.” Ghéill an rí do m'iarratas mar bhí lámh mhaith mo Dhé ag tacaíocht liom.

9 Then I came to the rulers of the lands across the river and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent with me captains of the army and horsemen.

9 Tháinig mé ansin go dtí gobharnóirí an chúige thar Eofrataes agus thug mé litreacha an rí dóibh. Bhí oifigigh airm agus marcshlua ón rí i mo choimhdeacht.

10 And Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, hearing of it, were greatly troubled because a man had come to the help of the children of Israel.

10 Nuair a chuala Sanballat an Horónach agus Tóibíá an tAmónach daoir, an méid sin, tháinig an-mhíshásamh orthu toisc aon duine a theacht le beart a dhéanamh ar mhaithe le clann Iosrael.

11 So I came to Jerusalem and was there three days.

11 J'arrivai à Jérusalem, et j'y passai trois jours.

11 Tháinig mé go Iarúsailéim dá bhrí sin agus d'fhan mé socair ann ar feadh trí lá.

12 And in the night I got up, taking with me a small band of men; I said nothing to any man of what God had put into my heart to do for Jerusalem: and I had no beast with me but the one on which I was seated.

12 Ansin d'éirigh mé san oíche, mé féin agus cúpla fear eile, agus gan é ráite agam le haon duine cad a bhuail Dia isteach i mo chroí a dhéanamh ar mhaithe le Iarúsailéim, agus gan agam d'ainmhithe ach an beithíoch a bhí do m'iompar.

13 And I went out by night, through the doorway of the valley, and past the dragon's water-spring as far as the place where waste material was put, viewing the walls of Jerusalem which were broken down, and the doorways which had been burned with fire.

13 Ghabhas Geata an Ghleanna amach dá bhrí sin agus thar Thobar an Dragúin go dtí Geata an Aoiligh. Rinne mé ballaí Iarúsailéim [agus na bearnaí iontu] a iniúchadh, agus, chomh maith, a geataí dóite.

14 Then I went on to the door of the fountain and to the king's pool: but there was no room for my beast to get through.

14 Chuaigh mé ar aghaidh ansin go dtí Geata an Tobair agus go Linn an Rí, ach ní raibh bealach do mo bheithíoch iompair thairis sin.

15 Then in the night, I went up by the stream, viewing the wall; then turning back, I went in by the door in the valley, and so came back.

15 Ansin san oíche ghabh mé an gleann suas agus mé ag iniúchadh an bhalla agus chas mé ar ais agus Geata an Ghleanna isteach arís, agus d'fhill mé mar sin.

16 And the chiefs had no knowledge of where I had been or what I was doing; and I had not then said anything to the Jews or to the priests or the great ones or the chiefs or the rest of those who were doing the work.

16 Ní raibh a fhios ag na hoifigigh cár chuaigh mé ná cad a bhí ar siúl agam; ní raibh aon ní fós ráite agam leis na Giúdaigh ná na sagairt, ná na huaisle, ná na hoifigigh, ná le haon dream eile ar a mbeadh cúram na hoibre.

17 Then I said to them, You see what a bad condition we are in; how Jerusalem is a waste, and its doorways burned with fire: come, let us get to work, building up the wall of Jerusalem, so that we may no longer be put to shame.

17 Dúirt mé leo ansin: “Feiceann sibh an cruachás ina bhfuilimid: tá Iarúsailéim ar lár agus a geataí dóite. Téanaigí, tógaimis ballaí Iarúsailéim agus ná bímis faoi náire mar seo a thuilleadh.”

18 Then I gave them an account of how the hand of my God was on me, helping me; and of the king's words which he had said to me. And they said, Let us get to work on the building. So they made their hands strong for the good work.

18 Agus d'inis mé dóibh conas mar a bhí lámh chineálta Dé mar thaca liom chun na maitheasa, agus d'aithris mé dóibh a ndúirt an rí liom. “I mbun oibre linn!” ar siad, “agus ar aghaidh leis an tógáil!” agus chrom siad ar an obair fhónta le fonn.

19 But Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, hearing of it, made sport of us, laughing at us and saying, What are you doing? will you go against the king?

19 Nuair a chuala Sanballat an Horónach agus Tóibíá an daor Amónach agus Geisim an tArabach mar gheall air seo, rinneadar magadh agus fonóid fúinn agus d'fhiafraíodar: “Céard atá ar siúl agaibh, an bhfuil ceannairc in aghaidh an rí á beartú agaibh?”

20 Then answering them I said, The God of heaven, he will be our help; so we his servants will go on with our building: but you have no part or right or any name in Jerusalem.

20 Ach thug mé freagra orthu: “Cuirfidh Dia neimhe agus talún an rath orainn! Táimidne, a shearbhóntaí, ag dul i mbun tógála; níl cuid ná ceart ná seoid chuimhne agaibhse in Iarúsailéim.”
