1st Kings 2

1 Solomon became the son-in-law of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh's daughter as his wife, keeping her in the town of David, till the house he was building for himself, and the house of the Lord and the wall round Jerusalem, were complete.

1 Rinne Solamh cleamhnas le Forann rí na hÉigipte; phos sé iníon Fhorainn agus thug sé leis í go Dúnfort Dháiví nó go mbeadh a theach féin agus teach an Tiarna agus an balla timpeall ar Iarúsailéim tógtha aige.

2 But all this time the people were making their offerings in the high places, because no house had been put up to the name of the Lord till those days.

2 Bhí an pobal ag ofráil íobairtí fós sna hardionaid mar nach raibh aon teach tógtha fós d'ainm an Tiarna.

3 And Solomon, in his love for the Lord, kept the laws of David his father; but he made offerings and let them go up in smoke on the high places.

3 Bhí grá ag Solamh don Tiarna agus lean sé reachtanna Dháiví a athair ach gur ofráil sé íobairtí agus túis ar na hardionaid.

4 And the king went to Gibeon to make an offering there, because that was the chief high place: it was Solomon's way to make a thousand burned offerings on that altar.

4 Théadh an rí go Gibeón le híobairtí a dhéanamh ann, mar is ann a bhí an t‑ardionad a ba mhó tábhacht; d'ofráladh an rí míle íobairt dhóite ar an altóir sin.

5 In Gibeon, Solomon had a vision of the Lord in a dream by night; and God said to him, Say what I am to give you.

5 I nGibeón nocht an Tiarna é féin i mbrionglóid oíche do Sholamh. Dúirt Dia: “Cibé rud is mian leat a fháil uaim, iarr orm é.”

6 And Solomon said, Great was your mercy to David my father, as his life before you was true and upright and his heart was true to you; and you have kept for him this greatest mercy, a son to take his place this day.

6 D'fhreagair Solamh: “Thaispeáin tú barr cineáltais agus buanghrá do do shearbhónta Dáiví, m'athair, nuair a bhí sé ag caitheamh a bheatha faoi chuing na dílseachta agus na córa agus an ionracais chroí i do láthair; bhuanaigh tú an sárchineáltas agus an buanghrá sin dó nuair a thug tú mac le bheith ina shuí ina ríchathaoir inniu.

7 And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in the place of David my father; and I am only a young boy, with no knowledge of how to go out or come in.

7 Agus anois, a Thiarna, a Dhia liom, tá rí déanta agat díomsa, do shearbhónta, mar chomharba ar Dháiví, m'athair.

8 And your servant has round him the people of your selection, a people so great that they may not be numbered, and no account of them may be given.

8 Tá do shearbhónta i measc an phobail seo atá tofa agat, pobal atá chomh hiomadúil sin nach féidir a líon a áireamh ná a mheas.

9 Give your servant, then, a wise heart for judging your people, able to see what is good and what evil; for who is able to be the judge of this great people?

9 Tabhair do do shearbhónta croí tuisceanach le do phobal a rialú, chun an mhaith a aithint thar an olc; óir cé a d'fhéadfadh a bheith i gceannas ar an bpobal seo agat atá chomh líonmhar sin?”

10 Now these words and Solomon's request were pleasing to the Lord.

10 Cette demande de Salomon plut au Seigneur.

10 Ábhar sásaimh ab ea é don Tiarna gur iarr Solamh a leithéid seo.

11 And God said to him, Because your request is for this thing, and not for long life for yourself or for wealth or for the destruction of your haters, but for wisdom to be a judge of causes;

11 Dúirt an Tiarna leis: “Dé bhrí gurb é seo an rud a d'iarr tú agus nach fad saoil duit féin a d'iarr tú, ná saibhreas, ná bás do naimhde, ach thú a bheith in ann breith thuisceanach a thabhairt,

11 Y díjole Dios: Porque has demandado esto, y no pediste para ti muchos días, ni pediste para ti riquezas, ni pediste la vida de tus enemigos, mas demandaste para ti inteligencia para oir juicio;

12 I have done as you said: I have given you a wise and far-seeing heart, so that there has never been your equal in the past, and never will there be any like you in the future.

12 déanaim duit ar an toirt mar a d'iarr tú. Bronnaim ort croí ciallmhar tuisceanach, i dtreo nach raibh do leithéid riamh romhat agus nach mbeidh do leithéid i do dhiaidh.

12 He aquí lo he hecho conforme á tus palabras: he aquí que te he dado corazón sabio y entendido, tanto que no haya habido antes de ti otro como tú, ni después de ti se levantará otro como tú.

13 And with this I have given you what you made no request for: wealth and honour, so that no king was ever your equal.

13 Sea go deimhin, agus an rud nár iarr tú, bronnfaidh mé ort chomh maith é: saibhreas agus glóir, nach raibh a leithéid ag aon rí eile riamh [i gcaitheamh do shaoil].

14 And if you go on in my ways, keeping my laws and my orders as your father David did, I will give you a long life.

14 Tabharfaidh mé fad saoil duit má leanann tú mo chosáin, agus tú ag coimeád mo dhlíthe agus mo reachtanna, faoi mar a lean Dáiví, d'athair.”

15 And Solomon, awakening, saw that it was a dream; then he came to Jerusalem, where he went before the ark of the agreement of the Lord, offering burned offerings and peace-offerings; and he made a feast for all his servants.

Ansin d'fhill sé ar Iarúsailéim agus sheas sé os comhair áirc chonradh an Tiarna, agus d'ofráil sé íobairtí uileloiscthe agus íobairtí comaoineach, agus bhí fleá aige dá shearbhóntaí go léir. Breith Sholaimh

16 Then two loose women of the town came and took their places before the king;

16 Ansin tháinig beirt mheirdreach go dtí an rí agus sheasadar ina láthair.

17 And one of them said, O my lord, I and this woman are living in the same house; and I gave birth to a child by her side in the house.

18 And three days after the birth of my child, this woman had a child: we were together, no other-person was with us in the house but we two only.

18 Ansin tharla, ar an tríú lá tar éis breith mo linbh dom, gur rug an bhean seo mac chomh maith; agus bhíomar linn féin, gan aon duine eile farainn sa teach ach lán na beirte againn amháin sa teach.

19 In the night, this woman, sleeping on her child, was the cause of its death.

20 And she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while your servant was sleeping; and she took it in her arms and put her dead child in my arms.

20 Agus d'éirigh sí meán oíche, agus thóg mo mhacsa ó mo chliathán agus d'ionailt ina codladh, agus chuir chuici ina hucht é agus chuir a mac marbh chugamsa i m'uchtsa.

21 And when I got up to give my child the breast, I saw that it was dead; but in the morning, looking at it with care, I saw that it was not my son.

21 Nuair a d'éirigh mé [ar maidin] chun an chíoch a thabhairt do mo leanbh, b'shin é ansiúd marbh é. Ach d'fhéach mé air go cáiréiseach ar maidin, agus níorbh é an mac a rugadh dom ar aon chor é.”

22 And the other woman said, No; but the living child is my son and the dead one yours. But the first said, No; the dead child is your son and the living one mine. So they kept on talking before the king.

22 Ach labhair an bhean eile: “Éitheach,” ar sise, “liomsa an leanbh beo, leatsa an marbh.” “Ní mar sin atá,” arsa an chéad bhean, “leatsa an marbh, liomsa an leanbh beo.” Sin mar a bhíodar ag aighneas i bhfianaise an rí.

23 Then the king said, One says, The living child is my son, and yours is the dead: and the other says, Not so; but your son is the dead one and mine is the living.

23 Ansin labhair an rí agus dúirt: “Deir bean acu: ‘An leanbh beo mo mhacsa; tá do mhacsa marbh,’ agus deir an bhean eile: ‘Éitheach! Do mhacsa an marbh; liomsa an leanbh beo.’

24 Then he said, Get me a sword. So they went and put a sword before the king.

24 Puis il ajouta: Apportez-moi une épée. On apporta une épée devant le roi.

24 Tabhair chugam claíomh,” arsa an rí agus tugadh claíomh i láthair an rí.

25 And the king said, Let the living child be cut in two and one half given to one woman and one to the other.

25 Et le roi dit: Coupez en deux l'enfant qui vit, et donnez-en la moitié à l'une et la moitié à l'autre.

25 “Roinnigí an leanbh beo ina dhá chuid,” arsa an rí, “agus tugaigí a leath do bhean acu agus a leath don bhean eile.”

26 Then the mother of the living child came forward, for her heart went out to her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the child; do not on any account put it to death. But the other woman said, It will not be mine or yours; let it be cut in two.

26 Ansin, an bhean ar léi an leanbh beo, labhair sí leis an rí mar bhí a croí á shnoí inti le trua dá mac: “Tabhair di an leanbh beo, le do thoil, a thiarna,” ar sí, “agus ná déan é a mharú ar aon chor.” Ach dúirt an bhean eile: “Ná bíodh sé agamsa ná agatsa, ach roinn é.”

27 Then the king made answer and said, Give her the child, and do not put it to death; she is the mother of it.

27 Ansin thug an rí a bhreith: “Tabhair an leanbh beo don chéad bhean,” ar sé, “agus na maraigh é ar aon chor; ise a mháthair.”

28 And news of this decision which the king had made went through all Israel; and they had fear of the king, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to give decisions.

28 Chuala Iosrael go léir an bhreith a thug an rí, agus thugadar urraim don rí mar gur thuigeadar go raibh eagna Dé ann chun an ceart a riar.
