Joshua 8

1 Now on hearing the news of these things, all the kings on the west side of Jordan, in the hill-country and the lowlands and by the Great Sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittites and the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites,

1 Na ríthe go léir ar an taobh seo den Iordáin agus ar na hísleáin, ar an bhfeorainn ar feadh na Farraige Móire i dtreo na Liobáine, na Hitigh, na Hamóraigh, na Canánaigh, na Pirizigh, na Hivigh, na Iabúsaigh - nuair a chualadar ina thaobh seo,

1 Y Acontecio que como oyeron estas cosas todos los reyes que estaban de esta parte del Jordán, así en las montañas como en los llanos, y en toda la costa de la gran mar delante del Líbano, los Hetheos, Amorrheos, Cananeos, Pherezeos, Heveos, y Jebuseos;

2 Came together with one purpose, to make war against Joshua and Israel.

2 rinneadar comhaontú le chéile chun troda in aghaidh Iósua agus chlann Iosrael.

3 And the men of Gibeon, hearing what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,

3 Nuair a chuala muintir Ghibeón an íde a thug Iósua ar Ireachó agus ar Háí,

4 Acting with deceit, got food together as if for a long journey; and took old food-bags for their asses, and old and cracked wine-skins kept together with cord;

4 bheartaíodar dul i mbun cneamhaireachta. D'imíodar agus fuaireadar lón agus thugadar leo seanmhálaí ar a n‑asail agus seanseichí fíona a bhí pollta ach iad deisithe;

5 And put old stitched-up shoes on their feet, and old clothing on their backs; and all the food they had with them was dry and broken up.

5 ar a gcosa bhí seanchuaráin chaite le cliatha iontu, agus an t‑éadach a bhí orthu bhí sé dreoite; an t‑arán go léir a bhí acu bhí sé briosc agus snas air.

6 And they came to Joshua to the tent-circle at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, We have come from a far country: so now make an agreement with us.

6 Chuadar go Iósua sa champa i nGilgeál agus dúradar leis-sean agus le muintir Iosrael: “Thángamar ón gcoigríoch; déanaigí conradh linn más eá.”

7 And the men of Israel said to the Hivites, It may be that you are living among us; how then may we make an agreement with you?

7 Ach dúirt muintir Iosrael leis na Hivigh: “B'fhéidir go bhfuil cónaí oraibh inár measc.

8 And they said to Joshua, We are your servants. Then Joshua said to them, Who are you and where do you come from?

8 Ils dirent à Josué: Nous sommes tes serviteurs. Et Josué leur dit: Qui êtes-vous, et d'où venez-vous?

8 “Seirbhísigh duitse sinn,” ar siad le Iósua. “Agus cé hé sibh féin?” arsa Iósua, “agus cad as daoibh?”

9 And they said to him, Your servants have come from a very far country, because of the name of the Lord your God: for the story of his great name, and of all he did in Egypt has come to our ears,

9 “Thángamar, do shearbhóntaí, ón imigéin,” ar siad, “de bharr clú an Tiarna do Dhia. Mar chualamar tuairisc air féin agus ar a ndearna sé san Éigipt;

10 And what he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of Jordan, to Sihon, king of Heshbon, and to Og, king of Bashan, at Ashtaroth.

10 agus ar a ndearna sé leis an mbeirt rí Amórach a bhí lastall den Iordáin, Síochon rí Heisbeon agus Óg rí Bháiseán a bhí ag cur faoi in Aisteárót.

11 So the responsible men and all the people of our country said to us, Take food with you for the journey and go to them, and say to them, We are your servants: so now make an agreement with us.

11 Dúirt ár seanóirí agus muintir ár dtíre go léir linn: ‘Tógaigí lón libh don aistear, agus téigí ina n‑airicis agus abraigí leo: “Seirbhísigh daoibh sinne: seo anois, déanaigí conradh linn.’ ”

12 This bread which we have with us for our food, we took warm and new from our houses when starting on our journey to you; but now see, it has become dry and broken up.

Bhí sé te fós nuair a thógamar linn ónár dtithe é mar lón bóthair an lá a chuireamar chun siúil chun teacht in bhur láthair; ach anois féach go bhfuil sé briosc agus snas air.

12 Dies unser Brot, das wir aus unsern Häusern zu unsrer Speise nahmen, war noch frisch, da wir auszogen zu euch, nun aber, siehe, es ist hart und schimmlig;

13 And these wine-skins were new when we put the wine in them, and now they are cracked as you see; and our clothing and our shoes have become old because of our very long journey here.

13 Bhí na seithí fíona seo nua nuair a líonamar iad; féach tá siad pléasctha; tá ar gcuid éadaigh agus ár gcuaráin caite tar éis an aistir chomh fada sin atá curtha dínn againn.”

14 And the men took some of their food, without requesting directions from the Lord.

14 Chaith na ceannairí an bia a rinneadar a thairiscint gan comhairle an Tiarna a lorg.

15 So Joshua made peace with them, and made an agreement with them that they were not to be put to death: and the chiefs of the people took an oath to them.

15 Rinne Iósua síocháin agus conradh leo ag dul i mbannaí lena n‑anam, agus dhaingnigh an pobal é sin faoi bhrí na mionn.

16 Now three days after, when they had made this agreement with them, they had word that these men were their neighbours, living near them.

16 Trí lá tar éis an conradh a dhéanamh leo fuarthas amach gur comharsana iad agus go raibh cónaí orthu i measc chlann Iosrael.

17 And the children of Israel went forward on their journey, and on the third day came to their towns. Now their towns were Gibeon and Chephirah and Beeroth and Kiriath-jearim.

17 Chuir clann Iosrael chun bealaigh agus [ar an tríú lá] thángadar chun a mbailte .i.

18 And the children of Israel did not put them to death, because the chiefs of the people had taken an oath to them by the Lord, the God of Israel. And all the people made an outcry against the chiefs.

18 Níor ionsaigh clann Iosrael iad mar gur mhionnaigh ceannairí an phobail dar an Tiarna Dia Iosrael ach rinne an comhthionól go léir monabhar in aghaidh na gceannairí.

19 But all the chiefs said to the people, We have taken an oath to them by the Lord, the God of Israel, and so we may not put our hands on them.

19 Ach dúirt na ceannairí leis an gcomhthionól go léir: “Thugamar mionn dóibh dar an Tiarna Dia Iosrael agus ní féidir dúinn baint leo anois.

20 This is what we will do to them: we will not put them to death, for fear that wrath may come on us because of our oath to them.

21 Keep them living, and let them be servants, cutting wood and getting water for all the people. And all the people did as the chiefs had said to them.

21 Agus lean na ceannairí orthu: “Déanaigí anacal orthu, agus bídís ina ngiollaí brosna agus uisce ag an gcomhthionól go léir.” Rinne an comhthionól rud ar na ceannairí.

22 Then Joshua sent for them, and said to them, Why have you been false to us, saying, We are very far from you, when you are living among us?

22 Chuir Iósua fios ar [mhuintir Ghibeón] agus d'fhiafraigh sé díobh: “Cad ab áil libh dár mealladh á rá go raibh cónaí oraibh i bhfad ó bhaile uainn nuair is anseo inár measc atá cónaí oraibh?

23 Now because of this you are cursed, and you will for ever be our servants, cutting wood and getting water for the house of my God.

23 Tá mallacht oraibh anois dá bhrí sin agus beidh cuid agaibh in bhur sclábhaithe, in bhur ngiollaí brosna agus uisce i dteach mo Dhé go deo.”

24 And, answering Joshua, they said, Because it came to the ears of your servants that the Lord your God had given orders to his servant Moses to give you all this land, and to send destruction on all the people living in it, because of you; so, fearing greatly for our lives because of you, we have done this.

24 Sé freagra a thugadar ar Iósua: “Rinneamar amhlaidh mar go rabhamarna, do searbhóntaí, lándeimhin de gur ordaigh an Tiarna, do Dhia, do Mhaois, a ghiolla, an tír seo go léir a thabhairt daoibh agus a bhfuil ina gcónaí ann a scrios romhaibh; agus de réir mar a bhí sibh ag druidim linn tháinig scanradh inár mbeatha orainn romhaibh.

25 And now we are in your hands: do to us whatever seems good and right to you.

25 Anois, féach, táimid faoi do bhois; déan linn mar is ceart agus is cóir a dhéanamh linn dar leat.”

26 So he kept them safe from the children of Israel, and did not let them be put to death.

26 Josué agit à leur égard comme il avait été décidé; il les délivra de la main des enfants d'Israël, qui ne les firent pas mourir;

26 Sé a rinne sé leo ná iad a shaoradh ó lámha chlann Iosrael; agus níor mharaíodar iad.

27 And that day Joshua made them servants, cutting wood and getting water for the people and for the altar of the Lord, in the place marked out by him, to this day.

27 Ach ón lá sin amach rinne Iósua giollaí brosna agus uisce díobh don chomhthionól agus chuir de cheangal orthu, go dtí an lá atá inniu ann, freastal ar altóir an Tiarna cibé ball ba rogha leis.
