Deuteronomy 19

1 When you go out to war against other nations, and come face to face with horses and war-carriages and armies greater in number than yourselves, have no fear of them: for the Lord your God is with you, who took you up out of the land of Egypt.

1 “Nuair a rachaidh tú chun cogaidh in aghaidh do naimhde agus go bhfeicfidh tú capaill agus carbaid agus arm is mó ná d'arm féin, ná bíodh eagla ort rompu; óir tá an Tiarna do Dhia i do theannta, an té a thug amach thú as tír na hÉigipte.

2 And when you are on the point of attacking, let the priest come forward and say to the people,

2 Nuair a thagann sibh i gcóngar an láthair chatha, tagadh an sagart os bhur gcomhair agus labhraíodh sé leis an bpobal,

3 Give ear, O Israel: today you are going forward to the fight; let your heart be strong; do not let uncontrolled fear overcome you because of those who are against you;

3 agus abradh sé leo: ‘Tugaigí cluas dom a Iosrael! Óir tá sibh ar tí cath a chur ar bhur naimhde inniu; bíodh misneach agaibh; ná bíodh scéin ná sceimhle ná scanradh oraibh ag tabhairt fúthu.

3 Y les dirá: Oye, Israel, vosotros os juntáis hoy en batalla contra vuestros enemigos: no se ablande vuestro corazón, no temáis, no os azoréis, ni tampoco os desalentéis delante de ellos;

3 und zu ihnen sprechen: Israel, höre zu! Ihr geht heute in den Streit wider eure Feinde; euer Herz verzage nicht, fürchtet euch nicht und erschreckt nicht und laßt euch nicht grauen vor ihnen;

4 For the Lord your God goes with you, fighting for you to give you salvation from those who are against you.

4 Óir tá an Tiarna bhur nDia ag dul libh chun troda ar bhur son in aghaidh bhur naimhde, agus chun an bua a bhreith daoibh.’

5 And let the overseers say to the people, If there is any man who has made for himself a new house and has not gone into it, let him go back to his house, so that in the event of his death in the fight, another may not take his house for himself.

5 “Ansin labhraíodh na scríobhaithe leis an bpobal mar leanas: ‘An bhfuil aon duine anseo a bhfuil teach nua tógtha aige ach gan é tíolactha fós? Abhaile leis ar eagla go bhfaigheadh sé bás sa chath agus gur fear eile a dhéanfadh é a thíolacadh.

6 Or if any man has made a vine-garden without taking the first-fruits of it, let him go back to his house, so that in the event of his death in the fight, another may not be the first to make use of the fruit.

6 An bhfuil aon duine anseo a bhfuil fíonghort plandáilte aige, ach gan sásamh bainte fós aige as a thoradh? Abhaile leis ar eagla go bhfaigheadh sé bás sa chath agus gur fear eile a bhainfeadh sásamh as a thoradh.

7 Or if any man is newly married and has had no sex relations with his wife, let him go back to his house, so that in the event of his death in the fight, another man may not take her.

7 An bhfuil aon duine anseo geallta le bean ach gan í tugtha leis aige? Abhaile leis ar eagla go bhfaigheadh sé bás sa chath agus gur fear eile a bhéarfadh leis í.’

8 And let the overseers go on to say to the people, If there is any man whose heart is feeble with fear, let him go back to his house before he makes the hearts of his countrymen feeble.

8 Leanadh na scríobhaithe orthu ag caint leis an bpobal agus abraidís: ‘An bhfuil easpa misnigh nó beaguchtach ar aon duine anseo? Abhaile leis agus ná cuireadh sé droch-mhisneach ar a chompánaigh chomh maith.’

9 Then, after saying these words to the people, let the overseers put captains over the army.

9 Nuair a bhíonn deireadh ráite ag na scríobhaithe leis na daoine, ansin ceaptar ceannfoirt i gceannas ar an bpobal. Cathracha Gafa

10 When you come to a town, before attacking it, make an offer of peace.

10 “Nuair a dhruidfidh tú i gcóngar cathrach chun í a ionsaí, déan coinníollacha a thairiscint di.

11 And if it gives you back an answer of peace, opening its doors to you, then all the people in it may be put to forced work as your servants.

11 Má ghlacann sí le síocháin agus a geataí a oscailt romhat, ansin cuirtear iallach ar an muintir go léir inti saothar a dhéanamh duit agus fónamh duit.

12 If however it will not make peace with you, but war, then let it be shut in on all sides:

12 Ach más amhlaidh, in áit síochána, go ndéanann sí cath a chur ort, ní foláir duit í a chur faoi léigear.

12 Mas si no hiciere paz contigo, y emprendiere contigo guerra, y la cercares,

12 Will sie aber nicht friedlich mit dir handeln und will mit dir kriegen, so belagere sie.

13 And when the Lord your God has given it into your hands, let every male in it be put to death without mercy.

13 Nuair a thugann an Tiarna do Dhia ar do láimh duit í, ansin cuir gach fireannach inti chun báis le faobhar claímh.

14 But the women and the children and the cattle and everything in the town and all its wealth, you may take for yourselves: the wealth of your haters, which the Lord your God has given you, will be your food.

14 Ach na mná, na leanaí, an stoc, a bhfuil de mhaoin sa chathair, agus a héadáil go léir, beir leat mar chreach iad; bain sásamh as éadáil do naimhde a thug an Tiarna do Dhia duit.

15 So you are to do to all the towns far away, which are not the towns of these nations.

15 Sin í an íde a thabharfaidh tú ar na cathracha atá i bhfad uait, agus nach mbaineann leis na ciníocha is comharsana duit.

16 But in the towns of these peoples whose land the Lord your God is giving you for your heritage, let no living thing be kept from death:

16 Maidir le cathracha na gciníocha úd atá an Tiarna do Dhia a thabhairt duit mar oidhreacht, ná déan anacal anama ar aon ní beo,

16 Empero de las ciudades de estos pueblos que Jehová tu Dios te da por heredad, ninguna persona dejarás con vida;

17 Give them up to the curse; the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, as the Lord your God has given you orders:

17 ach cuir faoi bhang iad na Hitigh, na hAmóraigh, na Canánaigh, na Pirizigh, na Hivigh, agus na Iabúsaigh, mar a d'ordaigh an Tiarna do Dhia,

18 So that you may not take them as your example and do all the disgusting things which they do in the worship of their gods, so sinning against the Lord your God.

18 d'fhonn nach múinfidís daoibh na nósanna gráiniúla atá acu á gcleachtadh i seirbhís a ndéithe a leanúint agus peaca a dhéanamh mar sin in aghaidh an Tiarna bhur nDia.

19 If in war a town is shut in by your armies for a long time, do not let its trees be cut down and made waste; for their fruit will be your food; are the trees of the countryside men for you to take up arms against them?

19 “Nuair a bhíonn cathair faoi léigear agat ar feadh i bhfad, agus tú á hionsaí, d'fhonn í a ghabháil, ná loit a cuid crann ag imirt faobhar tua orthu; caith a dtoradh, ach ná leag iad. An daoine daonna na crainn sa mhachaire a rá is go gcuirfeá léigear orthusan leis?

20 Only those trees which you are certain are not used for food may be cut down and put to destruction: and you are to make walls of attack against the town till it is taken.

20 Na crainn is eol duit nach crainn toraidh iad, ní cás duit iad a ghearradh agus a leagan d'fhonn sásanna léigir a dhéanamh in aghaidh na cathrach a bhíonn i gcogadh leat go dtí go dtiteann sí.
